Comparison of Eight Microcomputer Dietary Analysis Programs with the USDA Nutrient Data Base for Standard Reference

OBJECTIVES:To compare the effects of 18 months of continuous vs intermittent exercise on aerobic capacity, body weight and composition, and metabolic ®tness in previously sedentary, moderately obese females. DESIGN: Randomized, prospective, long-term cohort study. Subjects performed continuous exercise at 60 ± 75% of maximum aerobic capacity, 3 days per week, 30 min per session, or exercised intermittently using brisk walking for two, 15 min sessions, 5 days per week. MEASURES: Aerobic capacity, body weight, body composition, and metabolic ®tness (blood pressure, lipids, glucose and insulin). RESULTS: Signi®cant improvements for aerobic capacity of 8% and 6% were shown for the continuous and intermittent exercise groups, respectively. Weight loss for the continuous exercise group was signi®cant at 2.1% from baseline weight and the intermittent group was essentially unchanged. The continuous group showed a signi®cant decrease in percentage of body fat and fat weight while the intermittent group did not. HDL cholesterol and insulin were signi®cantly improved for both groups. CONCLUSIONS: In previously sedentary, moderately obese females, continuous or intermittent exercise performed long-term may be effective for preventing weight gain and for improving some measures of metabolic ®tness.

ObjetivoComparar os valores de energia e os nutrientes de 10 cardápios à luz de 4 programas computacionais de análise de consumo alimentar utilizados no Brasil. MétodosForam selecionados os programas NutWin, DietWin, DietPro e Virtual Nutri. Foram analisados o valor energético e 11 nutrientes de 101 alimentos, que compunham 10 cardápios. Para testar diferenças do valor nutricional dos 10 cardápios entre os programas, foram utilizados os testes de Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney. ResultadosOs programas variaram em relação ao número de alimentos (934 a 3 815), de nutrientes (28 a 144) e das principais fontes utilizadas. Não foram encontradas diferenças significantes dos valores de energia e macronutrientes entre os 4 programas. Em relação aos demais, o programa Diet Pro apresentou menores valores de gordura saturada, gordura monoinsaturada, gordura poliinsaturada, de ferro e sódio; o programa Virtual Nutri apresentou menores valores de fibra. ConclusãoOs resultados deste estudo não permitem inferências quanto à qualidade das bases de dados e nem indicam a superioridade de quaisquer desses programas que justifique sua utilização preferencial na prática do

Objective:To determine the level of agreement between the American (Chilean) and British food composition tables in estimating intakes of macronutrients and antioxidants. Design, setting and subjects: Information based on a food-frequency questionnaire with emphasis on antioxidants was collected from 95 Chileans aged 24-28 years. Nutritional composition was analysed using the British table of food composition and the American table of food composition modified by Chilean food items. Mean differences and limits of agreement (LOAs) of estimated intake were assessed. Results: Mean differences between the two tables of food composition ranged from 5.3% to 8.9% higher estimates when using the American (Chilean) table for macronutrients. For micronutrients, a bias towards a higher mean was observed for vitamin E, iron and magnesium when the American (Chilean) table was used, but the opposite was observed for vitamin A and selenium. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) ranged from 0.86 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.81 -0.91) to 0.998 (95% CI 0.995 -1.00), indicating high to excellent agreement. LOAs for macronutrients and vitamins A and C were satisfactory, as they were sufficiently narrow. There was more uncertainty for other micronutrients. Conclusion: The American table gives relative overestimates of macronutrients in comparison to the British table, but the relative biases for micronutrients are inconsistent. Estimates of agreement between the two food composition tables provide reassurance that results are interchangeable for the majority of nutrients.
