Comparison of Corrosion Resistance in Physiological Saline Solution of Two Austenitic Stainless Steels – 316LV and REX734

Abstract: In this work two austenitic stainless steels, REX734 and 316LV were tested in terms of their microstructure and corrosion properties. The REX734 is a newer generation stainless steel, with modified chemical composition, in comparison to the 316LV grade. Potentiodynamic study of corrosion resistance was conducted in physiological saline solution (0.9% NaCl solution). In spite of the similarities of microstructure, grain size and phase structure in both materials, the corrosion tests revealed that the REX734, wi… Show more

“…He concluded that the brittle hard phases with a size up to 0.3 μm are niobium carbides that could possibly initiate the fatigue fracture 95 . Romanczuk et al compared the corrosion resistance of the two common austenitic stainless steels 316LV and REX 734 and found superior resistance of REX 734 after potentiodynamic measurements 18 . Previous studies highlighted similar results regarding the superior corrosion behavior of REX 734 19,96 .…”

“…The addition of further alloying elements, such as molybdenum and nitrogen, enhances the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance 17 . In addition, relatively new nitrogen strengthened austenitic stainless steels, such as REX 734™, are widely used for hip and shoulder endoprostheses as well as surgical screws and plates 18 . They exhibit an increased corrosion resistance, improved mechanical properties and a reduced content of toxic nickel in comparison to 316 L 15,19 …”

“…It is impartial until a thermal cycle is not forced that raises the temperature above the 7-solvus. As the temperature increases above the 7-solvus, delta ferrite revives [51]. New delta ferrite will subdivide alloying elements in accord with the austenite and delta ferrite solubilities.…”

“…This leads to the creation of friction couples, which causes damage to the passive layer of the implant (Figure 1b). The conditions, together with the aggressive influence of the human body environment, contribute to the development of pitting [6], crevices [7] and fretting corrosion [8]. The products generated during the degeneration of the metallic biomaterial lead to pathomorphological changes in the surrounding tissue in the form of an allergy manifesting in the form of lesions, inflammation, rash, etc.…”
