Comparison of coronary artery calcification, carotid intima-media thickness and ankle-brachial index for predicting 10-year incident cardiovascular events in the general population

Abstract: Coronary artery calcification provides the best discrimination of risk compared with CIMT and ABI, particularly in the intermediate risk group, whereas CIMT may be an alternative measure for reassurance in the low risk group.

“…19,20 Ratio of systolic blood pressure measured at the shoulder and ankle, the ABI, was used to estimate presence of peripheral artery dysfunction. 21 Increase in brachial artery diameter was assessed by flowdependent vasodilation (Philips iU22 apparatus, USA) as described by Celermajer et al 22 Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was measured on the right arm after 5-10 minutes quiet rest twice and average values were used to calculate pulse pressure ∆P. Normal ∆P values were considered to be 30-50 mm Hg.…”

“…Results for cohorts not included in the individual patient data meta-analysis were consistent with those included in the analysis. 38,52,56,81,88 hsCRP Level | The body of evidence for hsCRP level is much larger (25 studies; n = 265 704) than for ABI and CAC but demonstrates less consistent findings (eTable 5 in the Supplement). The hsCRP literature is dominated by model development studies, which add the nontraditional risk factor to base models including Framingham Risk Score variables.…”

Thus, in the ESC 2011 Guidelines, a specific chapter was dedicated to patients with combined coronary and peripheral artery diseases.…”

As the 2017 ESC Guidelines could not cover the most recent progress made during that year, this issue also contains the 'The year 2017 in cardiology: aorta and peripheral circulation' again authored by Victor Aboyans and colleagues from the Dupuytren University Hospital in Limoges, France.…”
