It is important to address metabolic and heavy metal issues in organic waste through sustainable development, circular economy principles and effective solid waste management, particularly focusing on composting as a crucial approach recognized in Morocco's Green Generation Plan to reduce waste sent to landfills and mitigate greenhouse effects and gas emissions to fight against environmental pollution. This study aims to elevate the significance of organic waste in agriculture by employing composting technics, thereby mitigating its heavy metal content and safeguarding soil and farmland against various forms of contamination. This approach aligns seamlessly with the principles of sustainable development and the circular economy, advocating for responsible waste management and the augmentation of natural resource value. The findings of the study indicated a decrease in heavy metal levels across all composts, with a minimum values at the end of the composting in Gr compost recorded in all heavy metals analyzed (Pb -0.1125 mg•kg -1 , Cd -0.08 mg•kg -1 , Cr -2.22 mg•kg -1 , Zn -10.88 mg•kg -1 , Mn -28.85 mg•kg -1 , Cu -8.30 mg•kg -1 , Fe -545.18 mg•kg -1 and Ni -1 mg•kg -1 ). The findings from the assessment of heavy metal levels in the examined compost samples demonstrate their adherence to regulatory standards. Consequently, these composts can be confidently employed as organic soil enhancers, contributing to the enrichment of agricultural soils and fostering plant growth, all while avoiding the potential hazard of undue metal contamination. This study comes to confirm and consolidate previous works findings regarding the valorization of organic solid waste through composting and to minimize their major environmental risks by reducing trace metal elements through this biological process.

The beneficial effects of biochar addition during composting have been proved for many feedstocks, like manures and crop straws. However, the effect of biochar on the quality of composting product with seaweed as the feedstock and the bacterial response has not been investigated. In this study, the wheat straw biochar addition on the quality of the composting product and the bacterial response was explored at the rate of 0–10%. The results showed that biochar addition at the optimal rate (5%, w/w) could increase the germination index and the ratio of the optical density of humic acid at 460 nm to that at 660 nm (E4/E6) of the composting product, which indicated the decreased biotoxicity and enhanced compost maturity. The significant increase of the nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) content of the composting product proved the improvement of N cycling during composting process with biochar addition. The bacterial community of composting product was shifted and the relative abundance of some beneficial taxa (e.g., Muricauda and Woeseia) was significantly increased with biochar addition. Furthermore, the relative abundance of some bacterial genes related to amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism was also increased with biochar addition. The results of our study provided the positive effect of biochar addition on the composting of seaweed and could help to produce high quality seaweed fertilizer by composting with biochar addition.

Biochar can potentially reduce heavy metals (HMs) mobility and bioavailability during composting. However, siderophores secreted by functional microbes might lead to the re-mobilization of metals like Cu and Zn. Therefore, this study intended to explore the impacts of Mikania micrantha Kunth (MM) and MM-derived biochar (MMB) in the reduction of Cu and Zn bioavailability, and siderophore-related gene abundances during composting. Compared with MM and corn straw (CS) composts, a significant decline was noticed in the extractable and reducible Cu [(2.3 mg kg−1 + 12.1 mg kg−1), and (3.3 mg kg−1 + 14.6 mg kg−1)], and Zn [(103.1 mg kg−1 + 110.1 mg kg−1), and (109.6 mg kg−1 + 117.2 mg kg−1)] in MMB and corn straw biochar (CSB) composts, respectively. Besides, the lowest relative abundance of HMs-resistant bacteria particularly Corynebacterium (0.40%), Pseudomonas (0.46%), and Enterobacter (0.47%), was noted in MMB compost. Also, a significant increase in sesquiterpenoid and triterpenoid biosynthesis abundance (5.77%) accompanied by a reduction in the abundance of clusters related to siderophore transport, and siderophore transmembrane transporter activity was detected in MMB compost. Multivariate analysis labeled temperature, moisture content, total organic carbon, Corynebacterium, and Bacillus as the primary factors significantly correlated with the Cu and Zn bioavailability (− 0.90 ≤ r ≤ 0.90, P < 0.05). The structural equation model revealed that physicochemical parameters, microbial abundance, and siderophores exert a substantial influence on Cu and Zn bioavailability. Accordingly, MM and its derived biochar are recommended as an effective approach for accelerating Cu and Zn bioavailability reduction and managing the growth and distribution of invasive plants.
