The processing quality of 37 wheat varieties grown in Hungary and Austria (2011-2013) were assessed under organic and conventional low input management. The varieties studied were developed using three breeding strategies (conventional, organic and their combination: BFOA). The aim was to evaluate the effect of the field management and to assess the performance of varieties developed using different breeding methods, based on their quality traits under different managements. Furthermore, properties were identified that could characterize wheat quality and be used effectively for selection under both types of growing conditions. Strong year and genotype effects were found for all the quality traits (protein, starch, gluten, GI, Zeleny, Farinograph water absorption, development time, stability and quality number, falling number, flour yield, hardness index) of the studied varieties, while the effect of the management was significant for the physical properties (test weight, thousand-kernel weight, hardness) and gluten quality characters (gluten spread, GI, dough stability) of the grain. The standard deviation of the gluten quality traits characterized the differences between the breeding 3 strategies. It proved possible to pre select organic varieties for quality traits with high broad-sense heritability under conventional growing conditions, but direct selection in organic fields is suggested for gluten quality characters. Identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with important traits is one of the first steps towards deploying marker-assisted selection, but the lack of stability and consistency in identifying QTL across environments and populations remains a limitation. We conducted this study to identify QTL associated with agronomic traits in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) across management-specific environments. A total of 204 wheat lines derived from the 'Peace' × 'Carberry' cross were evaluated in 2016 and 2017 under conventional and organic managements in Edmonton, Canada, and genotyped with diversity arrays technology markers. Using the leastsquares means for each management system, 53 QTL were identified for nine agronomic traits, 14 of which were consistently identified in both managements. The largest QTL we identified was associated with plant height (QPht.dms-4B), which might be the plant height-reducing gene Rht-B1b from 'Carberry'. It explained 54 and 49% of the phenotypic variation in conventional and organic management, respectively. The second largest QTL was associated with gluten strength (QSds.dms-1A) in both managements. We identified consistent QTL across both organic and conventional managements, even though they were generally minor-effect QTL. Twelve organic management-specific QTL were found for grain yield, days to heading and maturity, plant height, test weight, and thousand-kernel weight, but most explained relatively low amount of phenotypic variation. The QTL identified across managements, especially the gluten strength QTL (QSds.dms-1A), may serve as useful markers in selection. The QSds.dms-1A region needs to be investigated further to confirm whether it is the Gli-1 storage protein gene.

Selection of winter durum genotypes grown under conventional and organic conditions in different European regions

Quality and agronomic performance of 14 winter durum wheat genotypes were examined in Austria, France and Hungary for three years. Heading time, wet gluten content, semolina yield and grain protein content are traits that showed genotype-dependent significant differences between the two management systems examined (conventional and organic). Therefore, breeding for these traits could result in specifically adapted genotypes for organic agriculture in different countries. Based on strong or moderately significant correlations between traits, gluten index and plant height could also be specifically selected in an indirect way. The need for environmentally specific selection for grain yield in later generations was also demonstrated. In general, varieties that had the highest performance in a given mega-environment originated from that mega-environment (except for yellow index). This finding provides evidence for the influence of the selection environment, whether it is the management system or the growing region. As the French site fell into a distinct mega-environment, it should be handled separately. The Hungarian site was found to be an ideal test environment for selecting genotypes with high adaptability for most of the quality traits, while the Austrian site could be used in selecting agronomic traits.This was also reflected in the breeding origin of the best winter durum genotypes for each trait. Based on these findings, a partly separate winter durum selection program is recommended for organic and low input agriculture in each country. As a consequence, specific varieties adapted to sub-optimal growing conditions would support the emerging movement towards sustainable farming systems.
