Comparison of Antioxidant Activities of Isoflavones from Kudzu Root (Pueraria lobata Ohwi)

Abstract: Isoflavones and their glycosides were isolated from kudzu root, and formononetin-7-O-glucoside (ononin) was identified from the plant for the first time. Among isolated compounds, the antioxidant potency of 5 major compounds was determined using (1) 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging assay, (2) thiocyanate assay in the linoleic acid model system, and (3) lipoxygenase inhibition assay. The study indicates that 5 compounds act as free-radical scavengers and inhibit both linoleic acid peroxidat… Show more

“…The strength of the antioxidant activity was determined based on IC 50 value, referring to Jun et al (2003) where the value of < 50 ppm is considered as strong, 50-100 ppm as active, 100-250 ppm as moderate, 250-500 ppm as weak, and > 500 ppm as inactive.…”

“…The test compounds could be categorized according to the strength of the antioxidant into groups of various intensity according to the IC 50 value. Antioxidant activity with an IC 50 value of less than 50 ppm was categorized as very strong, strong if the IC 50 value was between 50 and 100 ppm, moderate if the value of the IC 50 was 101-250 ppm, and weak if the IC 50 value was greater than 500 ppm [21].…”
