Comparison of Antifungal Activity of Extracts of Ten Plant Species and Griseofulvin Against Human Pathogenic Dermatophytes

Abstract: Background: This study was conducted to measure the antifungal activity of the extracts of 10 plant species used in traditional Iranian medicine against human pathogenic dermatophytes. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, the leaves of these plants (Calendula officinalis, Acacia arabica, Altheae officinalis, Ginkgo biloba, Juglans regia, Osimum basilicum, Solanum nigrum, Hypericum perforatum, Urtica dioica, and Anagalis arvensis) were taken and extractions were made in methanol and were tested ag… Show more

“…25 In contrary, research by Massiha & Muradov showed different MIC and MFC values against T. rubrum using extraction of ten plant species traditionally used by Iranian with MIC and MFC values ranging from 0.2 to 12.5 mg/ml and 0.8 to 15.62 mg/ml respectively. 26 This is consistent with the report that, low activity of antimicrobial agent has high MIC value while high activity antimicrobial agent give a low MIC value. 27 Incubation time is one of the factors that influence the MIC and MFC result.…”

“…Since no previous work recorded the antifungal activity of P. undulata against Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, and dermatophytes, we believe that this is the first report on the antifungal effect of P. undulata on these medically important fungi. The antifungal activity of P. undulata demonstrated in this study is supported by several previous scientific reports (Hashem, 2011;Jamalian et al, 2011;Massiha & Muradov, 2015) who indicated that a wide variety of plants extracts had fungistatic and fungicidal activities toward different fungal isolates at various concentrations.…”

“…There are few studies about activity of antifungal drugs against dermatophyte species in several regions of Iran (5,10,(12)(13)(14)(15)(16); hence, the current study aimed at assessing in vitro activities of griseofulvin and terbinafine against molecular identified dermatophytes using broth microdilution method.…”
