Comparison of 6-day progestagen treatment with Chronogest® CR and Eazi-breed™ CIDR® G intravaginal inserts for estrus synchronization in cyclic ewes

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of two different short-term progestagen treatments for estrus synchronization in cyclic ewes. A total of 292 ewes of 3 flocks (A-C) on different farms were treated for 6 days with Eazi-breed™ CIDR® G (n = 145) or Chronogest® CR (n = 147) vaginal inserts in combination with 0.125 mg Cloprostenol and 300IU eCG at device removal. Blood samples were taken for progesterone (P4) determination at insert application and removal as well as 14 days later. One day after i… Show more

“…The short‐term P4 protocol induces better quality follicle than the long‐term protocol (12–14 days) which may induce an aged follicle with a prolonged lifespan. This finding is consistent with those of previous studies performed in goats (Dixon et al, ; Knights et al, ), ewes (Ataman et al, ; Fleisch et al, ; Ungerfeld & Rubianes, ; Ustuner, Gunay, Nur, & Ustuner, ) and deer (Fleisch et al, ) treated with P4 for 5 to 7 days (Viñoles et al, ). Additionally, CIDR can liberate P4 in limited concentrations for longer period than is endorsed for oestrous synchronization (Schoenian, ).…”

“…As a general principle, these effects of progesterone can be used in estrus synchronization protocols [46][47][48]. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP), fluorogestone acetate (intravaginal sponge), melengestrol acetate, levonorgestrel, and intravaginal progesterone-releasing devices (CIDR and DICO) are used for estrus synchronization in sheep and goats [48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55].…”
