Comparison between tocotrienol and omeprazole on gastric growth factors in stress-exposed rats

Abstract: AIMTo investigate and compare the effects of tocotrienol and omeprazole on gastric growth factors in rats exposed to water-immersion restraint stress (WIRS).METHODSTwenty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups of seven rats. The two control groups were administered vitamin-free palm oil (vehicle) and the two treatment groups were given omeprazole (20 mg/kg) or tocotrienol (60 mg/kg) by oral gavage. After 28 d of treatment, rats from one control group and both treated groups were subjected… Show more

“…The vascular endothelial growth factor is required to stimulate the formation of granulation tissue and the development of new microvessels. Thus, the decrease in the gastric VEGF in IND-treated rats in this study connotes a delay in the healing of the gastric ulcer induced by IND and this is in accordance with a previous report [51]. However, administration of MECD stem elevated the VEGF level in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that MECD stem has angiogenic potential that stimulates vascularization resulting in healing of the gastric ulcer.…”

“…This assists in maintenance and recovery of gastric tissue in the event of injury. T3 was reported to exert its effectiveness by diverse mechanisms of protection, including upregulating the expression of bFGF, TGF-α, and VEGF in a stress-induced gastric ulcer rat model [238], which ultimately prevents and repairs gastric mucosal injuries. A summary of the literature on the effects of T3 on stress-induced gastric ulcer model is shown in Table 11.…”
