Comparison between the Reflux Finding Score and the Reflux Symptom Index in the Practice of Otorhinolaryngology

Abstract: Introduction  The Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease has a prevalence of ∼12% of the urban population in Brazil. Koufman proposed the term to designate Laryngeal Pharyngeal Reflux (LPR) symptoms, signs or tissue damage resulting from aggression of the gastrointestinal contents in the upper aerodigestive tract. Belafsky et al proposed a score that points to inflammatory laryngeal signs through videolaryngoscopic findings, the Reflux Finding Score (RFS). Moreover, in 2002, they published the Reflux Symptom Index (R… Show more

“…These findings are similar to those reported by other authors 15 , 25 , 26 ; the least observed signs were granuloma formation and posterior commissure hypertrophy with 11.4%. similar to the findings by other studies 16 , 25 but contrary to Belafsk and Koufman in their study on validity and reliability of RFS who found posterior pharyngeal hypertrophy to be the most common observed laryngoscopic sign. 14 …”

“… 14 , 15 Few other studies have found LPRD prevalence to be higher in female. 16 The differences may be due to different diagnostic tool and methodology used by different investigators. The median age with inter quintile range in years was 40 (18–73) years this is similar to findings by other studies.…”

“…Belafsky et al reported that RFS > 7 has a 95% predictive value for LPR 40 . Various studies have further reported RFS to correlate well with RSI in monitoring the response to anti‐reflux therapy 61–63 . In our study, 14 (58.3%) patients with LPR indicated by RFS also had GERD confirmed by 24‐h esophageal pH monitoring.…”

“…This study was limited in a number of issues: a) The number of patients recruited was limited, so a multi-center and large sample study could be performed. b) In our study, the NG-NR group acted as the control group only according to the RSI scores and responses to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) treatments which may be used as objective parameters with low cost and high practicality [ 31 , 32 ]. 24-h pH monitoring was not performed during the experiment to completely exclude the possibility of reflux [ 33 ].…”
