Hebel brick (also known as a lightweight brick) is a product of modern building materials because it has a lighter weight but it is stronger than cement bricks and red bricks. Hebel bricks can withstand pressures of more than 4 MPa and are suitable as building wall materials, and speed up construction, and save on cement material costs. One of the most important materials is silica sand in the manufacture of Hebel bricks. The silica sand used in the manufacture of Hebel bricks must have a moisture content of 10 % to 15 %. The purpose of this study is to provide a solution in the form of a drying technique design using a rotational speed control method and a machine that uses biomass-based energy sources. This rotary drying machine is designed to be able to dry wet silica sand into silica sand with water content according to standards. The development of this drying machine begins with making an initial design and parameter analysis. Then proceed to the design, manufacture, and performance testing. The calculation results show that the wet base moisture content has decreased from 33.17 % to 16.58 %, the dry base moisture content decreased from 49.63 % to 19.88 % and drying efficiency also decreased from 63.11 % to 17.11 %. Hence it can be seen that the percentage of wet base moisture content reduced by 50 %, the percentage of dry base moisture content reduced by 59.94 %, and the percentage of drying efficiency reduced by 72.9 %.

Proses pengeringan biji sorgum secara konvensional menggunakan sinar matahari memiliki beberapa kendala, seperti ketergantungan terhadap kondisi cuaca, lahan yang luas, dan kemungkinan pencemaran bahan. Sehingga penting untuk dimodifikasi dengan menggunakan teknologi pengeringan yang tepat. Inovasi dari penelitian ini adalah pengembangan pengering tipe rak dengan sumber energi dari kombinasi sinar matahari dan biomassa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perubahan suhu, kadar air dan menentukan konstanta laju pengeringan. Tray dryer dilengkapi dengan lubang pemanas yang berfungsi untuk memasak sari buah sorgum. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan tiga variasi debit udara, yaitu 0,124m3/s, 0,158 m3/s, dan 0,192m3/s. Proses pengeringan ini dilakukan selama 6 jam dengan kapasitas bahan 30 kg. Kayu yang digunakan dalam proses ini adalah kayu melinjo (Gnetum gnemon Linn.). Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa semakin besar debit/aliran udara, menyebabkan suhu udara dan suhu bahan menjadi lebih rendah. Kadar air sorgum yang dapat dikeringkan dari kadar air awal (wb) 16,04% sampai 7,89%. Sedangkan di kondisi lingkungan/kontrol kadar air awal 16,85% sampai mencapai 7,86%. Kedua proses ini tidak memiliki perbedaan signifikan. Dalam proses pengeringan biji sorgum ini terdapat dua periode, yaitu laju pengeringan konstan dan laju pengeringan menurun. Nilai laju pengeringan konstan berturut-turut adalah 0,00037%/menit, 0,00046%/menit, dan 0,00038%/menit. Sedangkan periode laju pengeringan menurun adalah 0,01348%/menit; 0,01541%/menit, dan 0,01557%/menit. Metode pengeringan hybrid yang dikembangkan mempunyai kelebihan dapat mengeringkan bahan dengan stabil dan menggunakan sumber panas yang tersedia secara berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini dapat bermanfaat sebagai referensi alternatif teknologi pengeringan biji sorgum.

<p><em>Most of the Joho Village people depend on rice as a staple, which triggers limited economic growth in the agricultural sector. The area has abundant corn yields and is potentially processed as corn grits (rice alternative). Corn processing has solely in dry-shelled corn form, a drop in corn-shelled prices, the stagnant of the Farmers Groups Association (FGA) activity, and the lack of knowledge (food products processing, entrepreneurship, and digital marketing) underlie these community service activities. The service activities aim to optimize the program for implementing science, technology, and FGA empowerment in Joho Village to discover corn grit production potential and ensure the sustainability of FGA community activities. Therefore, the service team agreed with Joho Village FGA to organize programs: (1) Corn grit and production methods socialization (Zoom meetings and direct discussion); (2) Production equipment introduction (direct discussion); (3) Corn grits production training (hands-on practice method); (4) Entrepreneurship and digital marketing socialization (direct discussion). The questionnaire was selected as a socialization evaluation method. Joho Village FGA has high enthusiasm for activity participation (90% of attendance). The service activities succeeded in increasing corn grit production expertise (86% of yield) and improved the knowledge of corn grits (80% of increased knowledge), entrepreneurship (81.25% of increased knowledge), and digital marketing (70% of increased knowledge) of Joho Village FGA. These achievements indicated corn grit production potential as the forecast of their business opportunities in the future and embarked on the beginning of Joho Village FGA’s empowerment sustainability.</em></p>
