“…Additionally, there are computer aided design processes that can customize wheelchair cushions for individuals who use a wheelchair that matches their needs and maximizes comfort, posture, and function (Redford, 1993). Shechtman, Hanson, Garrett, and Dunn (2001) examined the differences in relieving pressure among the Flelxseat, Jay 2, Pindot, ROHO High, ROHO Low, and Stimulite wheelchair cushions. The ROHO High and the ROHO Low cushions were more effective in relieving pressure for 5 minute periods according to the Xsensor Pressure Mapping System; however, body mass was an important confounding variable in terms of the cushions' ability to successfully relieve pressure.…”

“…Results from the current study have confirmed findings from previous studies with other populations ‘at risk’ of pressure ulcer development, demonstrating that no one cushion is suitable for all and that individual assessment is necessary (Bar 1991; Pellow 1999; Ferrarin et al . 2000; Shechtman et al . 2001).…”

“…Low midline pressure was considered to be crucial for these participants, corresponding to their most sensitive/painful areas. Maintaining low midline pressure provided comfort, a factor known to be crucial in compliance (Shechtman et al . 2001).…”

“…Occupational therapy researchers have used FSA pressure mapping systems to provide quantitative. assessments of seated postural control and wheelchair cushion selection (Abreu, 1995; Shechtman et al, 2001; Abreu et al, 2007). As supported in this study, FSA may help in the objective evaluation of UE weight bearing; however, clinicians might also use bathroom scales as a low-cost but less reliable alternative to roughly estimate UE weight-bearing pressure.…”
