Comparing the Maslach Burnout Inventory to Other Well-Being Instruments in Emergency Medicine Residents

Abstract: Background The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is considered the ''gold standard'' for measuring burnout, encompassing 3 scales: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Other well-being instruments have shown utility in various settings, and correlations between MBI and these instruments could provide evidence of relationships among key variables to guide well-being efforts. Objective We explored correlations between the MBI and other well-being instruments. “…As expected, MBI validity was studied more than for other PROMs, probably because MBI remains the most used OB PROM (Guseva Canu et al, 2020). Some authors considered MBI as the gold standard for OB PROMs (Maslach et al, 1981;West et al, 2012;Williamson et al, 2018), which can be debated provided the results of this review. The subsequent development of OLBI and CBI confirms the unsatisfactory features of MBI…”

“…The consumable management system was used for big data analysis of information-based systems, provided professional management services for clinical practice, and enhanced the reasonable representation of active management of medical consumables and its enforcement. Through the uni ed coding system, medical institutions optimized the traceability management of high-value consumables, strengthened the whole life-cycle supervision of low-value consumables, and improved the information sharing rate of the whole process [4,6,9,14,22] , thus improving the e ciency of logistics management, making the management of medical consumables in medical institutions more e cient and standardized [22,23] , and reducing the consumption proportion.…”

“…25 Apart from its shorter items that made it suitable for respondents in a high work-paced industry as the aviation, it also contained the main constructs in the popular Maslach’s inventory which has been reported as the “gold standard” in measuring burnout by Williamson, Lank and Cheema. 26 It has 14 items that are scored on a 3-point Likert format with responses ranging from “Never,” “Occasionally” to “Very often.” The retained items loaded significantly between 0.44 and 0.82, and the scale yielded cronbach α of 0.73. There were no negative items on the scale.…”
