Comparing Motion-based Versus Controller-based Pseudo-haptic Weight Sensations in VR

Abstract: This work examines whether pseudo-haptic experiences can be achieved using a game controller without motion tracking. For this purpose, we implemented a virtual hand manipulation method that uses the controller's analog stick. We compared the method's pseudo-haptic experience to that of the conventional approach of using a hand-held motion controller. The results suggest that our analog stick manipulation can present pseudo-weight sensations in a similar way to the conventional approach. This means that intera… Show more

“…One of the commonly used pseudo-haptic techniques in weight perception is to modulate the mapping between the actions of the user and the feedback provided by the system by altering the control/display ratio, by changing the amount of movement between virtual and actual hand or the displacement of the object to generate different weight illusion. The technique was applied in the research works of Dominjon et al [144], Rietzler et al [7], Samad et al [145], Taima et al [143], Hirao et al [142], and Paul et al [140].…”

“…Not sensing weight properties could negatively impact the sense of presence, primarily due to the absence of muscle stress [4]. Researchers have proposed several solutions to leverage vibrations and pseudo-haptic to emulate the weight of virtual objects [5]- [7]. However, neither simple vibration feedback nor pseudo-haptic approaches can sufficiently simulate the weight properties of virtual objects with the necessary level of accuracy and realism.…”

(Etzi et al, 2018;Guest et al, 2002;Kim et al, 2007;Lederman, 1979;Jousmäki & Hari, 1998)…”
