Compared water deficit response of two Populus x euramericana clones, Luisa Avanzo and Dorskamp

Abstract: -The drought response of two Populus x euramericana clones cv Dorskamp and Luisa Avanzo was investigated using potted cuttings growing in a greenhouse. The cv Dorskamp clone is known to be more tolerant than Luisa Avanzo under field conditions. Watering was withheld and several parameters followed during the onset of drought. The relation between predawn leaf water potential (Ψ wp ) and soil water content differed between clones: (i) Ψ wp tended to decline when soil water content decreased below a threshold of… Show more

“…In contrast, the wet climate population, which occurs in regions with a high annual rainfall, could be assumed to utilize abundant soil water supplies and thus grow rapidly. Similar results were also reported in previous poplar studies (Brignolas et al, 2000;Marron et al, 2002).…”

“…Although much is known about physiological and morphological responses to water deficits in woody plant studies, particularly in poplar (Tschaplinski et al, 1998;Brignolas et al, 2000;Johnson et al, 2002;Amlin and Rood, 2003;Siemens and Zwiazek, 2003), few studies have focused on the relationship among drought tolerance, water-use efficiency and plant hormones.…”

“…During the treatment, the stem height as well as the total leaf area was estimated as described by Brignolas et al (2000) on five replicates. The assessment of the secondary growth (cutting diameter increase) was carried out through the monitoring of the time course of the plant initial cutting diameter with an automatic point dendrometer described in Morabito et al (2006).…”

“…Individual leaf area was calculated using a binomial relationship which correlates leaf maximum width to leaf area (Brignolas et al, 2000). Total plant leaf area was calculated by summing individual leaf area.…”
