Comparative study of the clinical picture and histopathologic structure of oral leukoplakia

Abstract: The results of a clinicopathologic study of 165 oral leukoplakia cases followed up over a period of years are presented. The histologic changes were correlated with the clinical appearance and subsequent clinical course. A certain relationship between the clinical type of leukoplakia and its histologic changes could be established. The type of keratinization varied according to the clinical appearance; hyperorthokeratosis was found in the majority of leukoplakia simplex and verrucosa, and hyperparakeratosis wa… Show more

“…Oral leukoplakia legends PG Arduino et al of the studies results and the variable methodologies used. Collectively, the majority of studies have shown no conclusive association between tobacco and OLs (Banoczy and Csiba, 1976;Hogewind and van der Waal, 1988;Saito et al, 1995;Silverman and Gorsky, 1997;Schepman et al, 1998;Napier and Speight, 2008;Goldstein et al, 2010). Alcohol abuse and the association with OSCC have been strongly established (Bagnardi et al, 2001;Pelucchi et al, 2008;Goldstein et al, 2010), and the extent of consumption was found to be the strongest determinant of risk (Pelucchi et al, 2008).…”

“…In the assessment of epithelial dysplasia, an increase in nuclear-cytoplasmic (N/C) ratio has been cited (5,6,(33)(34)(35)(36)(37) as one of the features most likely to predict transformation of a precancerous lesion to squamous cell carcinoma. The N/C ratio lends itself readily to morphometric analysis.…”

“…The percentage of cases of oral leukoplakia that develop into carcinoma was calculated as 12% in a study of 312 cases by Sturgis and Lund, 7 13.2% in a study of 500 cases by Bánóczy and Csiba, 8 11.1% in a study of 56 cases by Mincer and associates, 9 but only 2.7% in a study of 331 cases by Roed‐Peterson 10 . A follow‐up of 600 cases of oral leukoplakia diagnosed in our laboratory has shown a 5% development of carcinoma within 10 years 11…”
