Comparative study of photodegradation of three hematoporphyrin derivative: Photofrin®, Photogem®, and Photosan®

Abstract: Abstract:We report the photodegradation of the three different photosensitizers derived from hematoporphyrin. In this paper we use the term phototransformation for describing the photodegradation or photobleaching process. This photodegradation alters the fluorescence during illumination. The rate of fluorescence variation was normalized to the solution absorption and the photon energy, resulting in the determination of the necessary number of photons to be absorbed to induce photosensitizer phototransformatio… Show more

“…Photodegradation of the macrocycle in H 2 Por has usually been attributed to oxygen-mediated reactions that may be prompted due to absorption of photonic energy by both the porphyrin substrate and molecular oxygen. Since excited porphyrins may sensitize O 2 species to give rise to the formation of singlet molecular oxygen ( 1 D g ) along with some other radicals, it is frequently referred to as the principal reason for the photo-bleaching of porphyrins [39][40][41][42]. Hence, it is important to assess the stability range for the most promising porphyrin systems, including their protonated forms.…”

“…The number of chikungunya cases increased 600% in 2015 in comparison to 2014, as approximately 18,000 cases were notified [8]. Infections by Zika virus reached around 18 Brazilian states in 2015 and caused population to be on alert due to their relationship with outbreaks of microcephaly, which hit mainly the Northeastern region.…”

“…Currently, in PDT there is an important concept associated with a model of light-tissue interaction, the amount of cell toxicity, and cell death, called threshold light dose [4]. It is known that the amount of cell toxicity should exceed a minimum value to promote tissue necrosis.…”

“…This prevents PDT to take over its full potentiality. Many authors have investi-gated alternative ways to increase PDT efficiency developing new drugs [3,4], new light sources [5], or even using combined drugs or combined light sources available [6].…”
