Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an important high-performance thermoplastic. Its excellent strength, stiffness, toughness, fatigue resistance, biocompatibility, chemical stability and radiolucency have made PEEK attractive in dental and orthopedic applications. However, PEEK has an inherently hydrophobic and chemically inert surface, which has restricted its widespread use in clinical applications, especially in bonding with dental resin composites. Cutting edge research on novel methods to improve PEEK applications in dentistry, including oral implant, prosthodontics and orthodontics, is reviewed in this article. In addition, this article also discusses innovative surface modifications of PEEK, which are a focus area of active investigations. Furthermore, this article also discusses the necessary future studies and clinical trials for the use of PEEK in the human oral environment to investigate its feasibility and long-term performance.

Purpose: to evaluate bone height changes around distal abutments (canines) with two different framework materials for extracoronal attachment mandibular bilateral distally extended removable dental prosthesis (RDP) and compare patient satisfaction . Materials and methods:Twenty-eight mandibular Kennedy class I partially edentulous patients with remaining 6 anterior teeth were selected. For all patients splinting of remaining anterior abutments by porcelain fused to metal crowns, the RDP frameworks were designed by CAD and printed into 3-D resin pattern. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Patients in group I received extracoronal attachment RDP framework fabricated from milled BioHPP PEEK while patients in group II received extracoronal attachment RDP framework fabricated from Cobalt -Chromium (Co-Cr) material. Digital radiography was used for vertical bone loss (VBL) assessment around canines at insertion, 6 and 12 months. Patient satisfaction was measured after 6 months using visual analog scale (VAS). Statistical analysis was done by t-test and Mann-Whitney.Results: VBL significantly increased from T6 to T12 for both groups where (p=0.038 and 0.021) for PEEK and Co-Cr framework respectively. there was a significant difference in VBL between two groups at T12 only (p=0.012) where Co-Cr framework recorded significant higher VBL at T12 than PEEK. As for patients satisfaction, patients who received PEEK RDP frameworks were more satisfied as regards esthetic and comfort than patients who received Co-Cr RDP frameworks Conclusion: Extracoronal attachment RDPs with PEEK frameworks showed less VBL than those with Co-Cr frameworks. Patients with PEEK frameworks were more satisfied than patients with Co-Cr frameworks as regards appearance, comfort, and overall satisfaction.

Applications and Clinical Behavior of BioHPP in Prosthetic Dentistry: A Short Review

(1) Background: BioHPP® (Bredent, UK) is a partially crystalline poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) that is strengthened using ceramic. PEEK and its various formulations represent a very interesting alternative, and has been in-depth with its literature in recent years; (2) Methods: A PubMed and Scopus search for the term “BioHPP” yielded 73 results and 42 articles which were included in this short review. Considering the scarce literature on the subject, each article was considered in this review; (3) Results: the articles analyzed are very recent, all published in the last 5 years. Their clinical evaluation of BioHPP® highlights many positive aspects, and few articles have highlighted critical issues in its multiple clinical applications; (4) Conclusions: this material is not only extremely interesting for the future, but possesses characteristics suitable for clinical application today, for endocrowns, small adhesive bridges, temporary prostheses and for immediate loads on implant restorations. The excellent aesthetics and the possibility of simple reprocessing of the restorations made with this material invite its clinical application.
