Comparative Studies on the Antennal Sense Organs of Queen and Worker Honey Bees, Apis mellifera L.

Abstract: The antennal forms and sensilla of queen and workers honeybees Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to describe the types, and distribution of sensory structures to ascertain the relationship between sensory structures and behavior. Differences were found in sensilla types' diversity and distribution on the antennae of queens grafted from 12 and 48 hrs and workers honey bees. The scape with long trichoid were found in workers but with special very long … Show more

“…In addition, vomiting and diarrhea were happened to larvae then they died. The sense organs in all insects differ in their number and type (Gaaboub and Tousson, 2005, Faucheux, 2013, Abdelmegeed and Sawires, 2015and Fleischer et al, 2017. The distribution of sense organs on different body parts of insects such as on antennae, head capsule, mouth parts, legs and anal cerci was studied by Kent, et al(1986), Hunger and Steinbrecht (1998), Pophof (1997), Dong et al(2014) and Gaaboub et al(2016).…”

“…The antenna of honey bees carries a lot of sense organs (Abdelmegeed & Sawires, 2015;Al-Ghamdi, 2006;Naik et al, 1995) such as mechanoreceptors (trichoid and campaniform ) and chemical sense organs such as placoid (Getz and Akers, 1994 ) and basiconicum and different diameter of pores such as sensilla coeloconica and sensilla ampullacea (Stort and Malaspina, 1997) which affected on behavior of honey bee workers. (Jung et al, (2014); Rogers et al, (2013) ; Muenz et al, (2012); Rigosi et al, (2011) studied the effect of sense organs on the behavior of bees (i.e.…”
