Effect of Gamma irradiation on morphology of antennal sensilla of Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae)

Abstract: The effect of different dose levels of gamma irradiation on the morphology and distribution of the sensory receptors of the antennae of lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), was studied with the scanning electron microscope. The results obtained distinguished three types of sensilla: chaetica (ch1"long" and ch2 "short"), basiconica (b), and ampucellaceous (am) present on the apical distal three segments of flagellomeres. Irradiation with a dose level of 75 Gy had no effect on the general distribution … Show more

“…The average weight of 500 seeds per sample was 5.68 g. A 2000 g pack would have approximately 176,056 seeds resulting in, approximately, seven seeds per adult (Table 1). The high reproduction rate and short life cycle of this insect favors its population increase (Mubayiwa et al, 2018;Sawires and Elbassiouny, 2019). More than 13 adults per gram of sudangrass seeds shows that a physiological quality reduction may be occurring, as reported for wheat seeds with 12.5 adults per gram (Saad et al, 2018).…”

“…Morphological changes such as crinkled sensilla bent in different directions, irregular shapes, and areas of swelling have been reported in the antennal sensilla of the mosquito Culex pipiens after gamma radiation (Ibrahim et al, 2018). These deformities have also been recorded in other insects exposed to gamma rays such as the cotton leafworm S. littoralis (Hazaa, 2010), the peach fruit fly B. zonata (El-Akhdar & Afia, 2009), the palm weevil Rhynchophorous ferrugineus Olivier (Mahmoud et al, 2012), the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta Linnaeus (Oland et al, 1988), the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella Linnaeus (El-Kholy & Mikhaiel, 2008), and the honeybee Apis mellifera Linnaeus (Sawires et al, 2012). The sensilla deformities increased and the number of trichoid sensilla decreased as the insects were treated with increasing doses of radiation (Hazaa, 2010).…”

“…The antenna has lost most of different types of sensilla and some of its segments became transparent with high and moderate doses. Also, Sawires and Elbassiouny 27 on Rhyzopertha dominica and El Degwi and Zarhan 28 on Bactrocera zonata.…”
