Comparative molecular analysis of community-associated and healthcare-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates from children in northern Taiwan

Abstract: In-vitro MICs and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of daptomycin, linezolid, tigecycline, vancomycin and teicoplanin against Gram-positive bacteria were determined using the broth microdilution method for ten blood isolates each of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), including two vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis. One strain of VISA was tested in a time-kill synergism… Show more

“…Two major clones with multidrug resistance belonging to the ST59 lineage accounted for the increasing incidence of MRSA colonization. The two clones also predominated in the clinical CA-MRSA isolates that have been identified in nearly 60% of CA S. aureus infections in Taiwan (18). These observations clearly revealed an accelerated, island-wide transmission of MRSA in the community.…”

“…Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with SmaI digestion was used in this study to fingerprint the MRSA isolates and was performed according to procedures described by Huang et al (22). The genotypes were designated in alphabetical order, as in the previous studies (17)(18)(19); any new genotype identified was designated consecutively. PFGE patterns with fewer than four band differences from an existing genotype were defined as subtypes of that genotype.…”

“…In Taiwan, the ST59/SCCmecVII (or alternatively assigned as V) clone has been noted as a major CA-MRSA clone [32,259,260]. They are mostly PVL-positive [32,259].…”

“…The long-term carriage pattern of CA-MRSA in healthy hosts is less commonly reported and may be distinct from currently known patterns, which are mostly derived from observations on MSSA. In Taiwan, MRSA has accounted for Ͼ50% of childhood CA infections since 2005 (8). Carriage of MRSA in the nose was identified in 7.8% and 3.7% of the pediatric and adult populations in Taiwan, respectively (7,9).…”
