Comparative Metabolite Profiling and Fingerprinting of Medicinal Cinnamon Bark and Its Commercial Preparations via a Multiplex Approach of GC–MS, UV, and NMR Techniques

Abstract: Various species of cinnamon (Cinnamomum sp.) are consumed as traditional medicine and popular spice worldwide. The current research aimed to provide the first comparative metabolomics study in nine cinnamon drugs and their different commercial preparations based on three analytical platforms, i.e., solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry method (SPME/GC–MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV/Vis) targeting its metabolome. SPME/GC… Show more

“…Examples include principal component analysis (PCA) and PLS. Such data analysis investigates multiple and interacting factors that help in identification and determination of potential markers specifically [ 55 , 56 ]. In relation to major primary and secondary metabolites quantified in our previous publications on these sprouts using MS and NMR [ 7 , 8 ], we attempted to use such a matrix for identification of active agents using chemometric tools.…”

“…Chemometrics was used mainly to optimize the database's peak identification, in order to be able to widen its use when GC parameters were modified. Analyses on specific spices, with the aim of studying their geographical origin or possible adulterations, were mainly focused on saffron [28,49,50], cinnamon [51,52] and ginger [53,54].…”

“…Thus, SPME presents a potential tool for VOCs analysis in the roots of tongkat ali especially considering its medium aroma. Coupled to SPME; gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC–MS) is the most suited for identification of aroma components 11 , 12 .…”
