Comparative Evaluation of Sequential Intraoperative Use of Whole Blood Followed by Brilliant Blue Versus Conventional Brilliant Blue Staining of Internal Limiting Membrane in Macular Hole Surgery

Abstract: Use of whole blood before staining internal limiting membrane with BB causes earlier and better visual rehabilitation postoperatively, which could be attributed to earlier photoreceptor regeneration as evidenced by inner segment/outer segment junction continuity and increase in outer foveal thickness.

“…Autologous Blood In order to prevent subretinal migration of dye and the resultant retinal toxicity associated with vital stains, it was proposed to use autologous blood to cover the MH before injection of brilliant blue dye. It has been demonstrated that compared to conventional method, the use of pre-staining autologous blood led to better visual acuity outcomes and continuity of ellipsoid zone at all post-operative time points [201].…”

“…[ 38 ] Ghosh et al .reported earlier and better visual rehabilitation with the use of whole blood. They attributed this to earlier photoreceptor regeneration and was confirmed by inner segment/outer segment junction continuity and increase in outer foveal thickness on OCT.[ 39 40 ] On the contrary, Purtskhvanidze et al .reported that while APC was effective in the treatment of persistent MH, autologous whole blood did not (85.2% vs 7.1%). [ 41 ]…”
