Comparative evaluation of antioxidant activity of Cannabis sativa L. using FRAP and CUPRAP assays

Abstract: Cannabis is one of the oldest plants on earth, which is known and used for medical purposes. There are many articles on hempseed oil research in the scientific databases, while the antioxidant activity of Cannabis sativa L. herb extracts has not been extensively studied yet, to our knowledge. In the present study, antioxidant properties of different Cannabis sativa L. varieties from different regions of Lithuania were examined. Spectrophotometric FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) and CUPRAC (cupric redu… Show more

“…For the antioxidant potential of the cannabis plant not only cannabinoids might be responsible but also terpenes [53,54], or flavonoids [55,56]. In a study on different varieties, the antioxidant potential was also changeable [57], confirming the thesis. The composition and quantity of these compounds can vary significantly among different cannabis varieties, making the cannabis market rich in diversity.…”

“…Whereas, after the incubation of reaction, a yellowish solution was obtained which comparing with a colourless methanol (or ethanol) solution cannot reach 100% [22]. Other scientists who tested different methods for RSA determination obtained distinctions between the same variety cultivated in different locations (north, south, east) areas and used various determination meth ods as well showed differences [34].…”

“…Few studies have been conducted on the extracts and their biological properties of fibre hemp cultivated in Northern Europe [ 41 , 43 ], despite the fact that Lithuania is among the top ten producers of industrial hemp in Europe. The soil of the growth habitat (where fibre hemp was cultivated, Figure S1 in the Supplementary Materials ) was investigated and characterized by some main parameters.…”
