The use of many fungal phytotoxins as natural herbicides is still limited because they cannot penetrate leaf cuticle without injury and a little is known on their selectivity. In order to assess the herbicidal potential of phytotoxic 10-membered lactones (stagonolide A, stagonolide K, and herbarumin I), the selection of adjuvants, the evaluation of selectivity of the toxins and the efficacy of their formulations were performed. Among four adjuvants tested, Hasten™ (0.1%, v/v) increased phytotoxic activity of all the toxins assayed on non-punctured leaf discs of Sonchus arvensis. When assayed on intact leaf fragments of 18 plants species, 10 species were low to moderately sensitive to stagonolide A, while just five and three species were sensitive to stagonolide K and herbarumin I, respectively. Both leaf damage or addition of Hasten™ (0.1%) to the formulations of the compounds considerably increased or altered the sensitivity of plants to the toxins. Stagonolide A was shown to be non-selective phytotoxin. The selectivity profile of stagonolide K and herbarumin I depended on the leaf wounding or the adjuvant addition. Stagonolide A and herbarumin I formulated in 0.5% Hasten™ showed considerable herbicidal effect on S. arvensis aerial shoots. This study supported the potential of the oil-based adjuvant Hasten™ to increase the herbicidal efficacy of natural phytotoxins.

Due to the ability of weeds to deplete nutrients from the soil, crop plants become subjected to a complex of abiotic and biotic stresses. Thus, the interactive effects between one of the most important micronutrients, i.e., zinc (Zn) and some herbicides on weeds, rice yield and nutrient uptake were investigated. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design in factorial arrangement using three replicates. Ten combinations of two Zn levels (without Zn, Zn−, and with Zn, Zn+) as well as four herbicides (halosulfuron-methyl, bentazon, azimsulfuron, pyrazosoulfuron-ethyl), and unweeded treatment were investigated. Findings clarified that application of halosulfuron-methyl herbicide whether with Zn− or Zn+ were the effective combinations for decreasing weed biomass. Halosulfuron-methyl and pyrazosoulfuron-ethyl had similar impact either with Zn− or with Zn+ resulted in minimum values of K uptake by weeds. The increases in grain yield ha −1 due to the application of halosulfuron-methyl, pyrazosoulfuron, azimsulfuron, and bentazon reached 13.4, 15.9, 21.3, and 24.8%, respectively, under Zn+ greater than Zn−. Halosulfuron-methyl x Zn+ was the promising interaction treatment for increasing P, K, and Zn uptakes by rice. Correlation coefficient showed that fertile panicle number, fertile grain number, rice N and K uptakes, weed biomass, and weed P uptake were the most closely associated traits with grain yield. Our study proved that there is a positive correlation between Zn and the applied herbicides in rice. Zn application alleviated the herbicidal pressure (abiotic stress) and decreased weed harmful impacts (biotic stress) on rice plants. Thus, it should be focused on the complementary effect between Zn and applied herbicides in breeding programs for generating new rice genotypes which are efficient in Zn utilization and tolerant to herbicides.

As a new low volume sprayer, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) application is developing quickly worldwide. Alkyl ethyl sulfonate soluble concentrate is a kind of spray adjuvants for defoliants, which is widely used in cotton defoliant application. The aim of this study was to compare the droplet deposition, defoliation and boll opening of a UAV added with six dosages of alkyl ethyl sulfonate on the cotton. Addition with 4.2 g a.i./hm 2 (one-sixtieth of the recommended dosage in the field) alkyl ethyl sulfonate could significantly increase the droplets coverage rate, and improve defoliation and boll opening effects. Added with lower dosage alkyl ethyl sulfonate (4.2 g a.i./hm 2 and 8.4 g a.i./hm 2), the droplet distribution uniformity was much better than that of moderate (84 g a.i./hm 2) and high dosage (252 a.i./hm 2) of alkyl ethyl sulfonate. It could not only ensure the effects of defoliation and boll opening, but also reduce the environmental pollution by alkyl ethyl sulfonate.
