Comparative chromosome mapping of 5S rDNA and 5SHindIII repetitive sequences in Erythrinidae fishes (Characiformes) with emphasis on the Hoplias malabaricus ‘species complex’

Abstract: Chromosomal localization of 5S rDNA and 5SHindIII repetitive sequences was carried out in several representatives of the Erythrinidae family, namely in karyomorphs A, D, and F of Hoplias malabaricus, and in H. lacerdae, Hoplerythrinusunitaeniatus and Erythrinus erythrinus. The 5S rDNA mapped interstitially in two chromosome pairs in karyomorph A and in one chromosome pair in karyomorphs D and F and in H. lacerdae. The 5SHindIII repetitive DNA mapped to the centromeric region of several chromosomes (18 to 22 ch… Show more

“…The repetitive DNA family 5SHindIII, with localization in the centromeric region in H. malabaricus, is exclusive to this group among the Erythrinidae and it was present in the ancestral of the different karyomorphs (Ferreira et al, 2007). Variation was found for this marker in the number of sites among the populations studied, which may be related to the unstable nature and high evolutionary rate of repetitive sequences (Charlesworth et al, 1994).…”

“…Although this proximal 5S rDNA site has not been observed in the majority of populations of H. malabaricus analyzed thus far, it is likely to be a plesiomorphic condition, once this similar character state has been observed in other species of the genus Hoplias, such as H. intermedius (cited as H. aff. lacerdae) and in some karyomorphs/populations of H. malabaricus (Ferreira et al, 2007;Blanco et al, 2010).…”

“…Analyses of satellite DNA in Neotropical fish, although relatively recent, have provided important data concerning heterochromatin composition and the probable origin of sex and supernumerary chromosomes de Jesus et al, 2003;Vicente et al, 2003, Ferreira et al, 2007.Astyanax fasciatus (Teleostei, Characiformes) has been considered a species complex because it is widely distributed throughout Brazilian rivers and presents diverse karyotypic features. Cytogenetic analyses allowed the identificaAbstract.…”

“…These 5S rDNA sites were similar to pericentromeric heterochromatin location. The occurrence of multiple sites of the 5S rDNA in G. carapo are possibly due to a family of disperse repetitive DNA like SINE (short interspeced nuclear element) inserted in the NTS (non transcibed spacer) ( that could be evoluated in pseudogenes derived from 5S rDNA, described in others species studies in the Gymnotidae (CLARO, 2008, SILVA, 2010 and in the Erythrinidae family (FERREIRA et al, 2007).…”
