Comparative assessment of the acute toxicity, haematological and genotoxic effects of ten commonly used pesticides on the African Catfish, Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822

Abstract: Freshwater fishes are faced with increasing threats due to intensification of agriculture. This study evaluated the haematological and genotoxic effects of exposure of the African Catfish, Clarias gariepinus to sublethal concentrations of commonly used pesticides in agricultural settings. The evaluated pesticides were abamectin, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, dichlorvos, dimethoate, fipronil, lambda-cyhalothrin and paraquat. The fishes were initially exposed singly… Show more

“…Various studies have evaluated the effect of pesticides on neurological disorders with Parkinson's disease as one of the major disorders caused by these chemicals [40,43,44]. Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels as a result of pesticide usage and exposure can be associated with imbalances in cell homeostasis, which, in turn, affects cellular components and DNA stability, and causes genotoxicity [42,[44][45][46][47][48][49][50]. A positive correlation between the incidence of various types of cancers such as leukemia, lung, and ovarian cancer as dependent variable and exposure to pesticides has been shown in many studies [13,29,30].…”

“…Деякі автори пов'язують прооксидантну дію пестицидів з генотоксичними ефектами, які виявляються в безхребетних і хребетних тварин (Yadav et al, 2021). Зокрема, показані генотоксичні ефекти синтетичних піретроїдів у тканинах гідробіонтів (Amaeze et al, 2020).…”
