Comparative Analysis of Serum Malondialdehyde, Antioxidant Vitamins and Immunoglobulin Levels in Patients Suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Abstract: The relationship between the elevated levels of serum malondialdehyde, depleted level of antioxidants (vitamin A, E and C) and altered level of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG and IgM) in several psychiatric disorders has been established by various experimental evidences over the past few years. But previously no study was carried out to determine these components in patients suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in Bangladesh. This study was conducted to compare the serum concentration of these compone… Show more

“…However, after adjusting for the influence of various confounding factors (gender, age, motor symptoms, NMSs, and doses of levodopa) in the multiple linear regression analysis model, we found that serum IgG levels were negatively associated with mood/cognition problems and were positively associated with gastrointestinal tract dysfunction in PD patients. In patients with generalized anxiety disorder or major depression, the level of serum IgG remained normal (Gold et al, 2012; Islam et al, 2014). Thus, we hypothesized that the pathological changes of PD might contribute to this.…”

“…The increased anxiety-like behaviour observed in present study is considered as one of the early symptoms of emotional disorder occurring from hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis abnormalities that decrease brain function. It has also been reported that oxidative stress may affect human anxiety (40) .…”

“…Serum concentration of IgA and IgM are significantly higher in obsessive conversion disorder (OCD) patients compare to healthy control but the change of IgG is not significant [21]. Serum IgM levels of GAD patients was found significantly higher than that of the controls whereas IgA and IgG levels were insignificant [22]. All the above findings where immunoglobulin levels were altered can be considered as risk factors for the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illness.…”
