The state of health of children is one of the indicators of the quality of the environment, social well-being and the level of health of the country. The purpose of this study was to assess the physical development of children and adolescents. To assess the physical development of children and adolescents living in Yakutsk and the central regions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). 1,305 children aged 8-15 years old were examined. Physical development was investigated using anthropometry and handgrip test according to generally accepted methods. The following results were obtained: according to anthropometry, modern schoolchildren have secondary physical development. According to our data 11, 12-year-old girls are higher than boys of the same age, and from the age of 14 the body length of boys exceeds the body length of girls. Body weight indicators do not have reliable differences in gender, however, at the age of 13, the body weight of Russian boys is significantly more than the body weight of Yakut boys. Russian girls have higher power opportunities in all age categories than Yakut girls. The power capabilities of Russian boys of prepubertal age belong to high values of physical development. The level of dynamometry in all age categories belongs to the 90centile corridor, which indicates high physical development in girls of Russian nationality. For girls of Yakut nationality, only at the age of 10 and 12, power capabilities are higher than average values. Thus, children of Russian nationality living in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), functional indicators (handgrip test) exceed average values.

Analysis of physical development in children and adolescents is an integral to the monitoring of child population. Health status of children and adolescents is an essential criterion of societal welfare. Numerous studies of physical development in children indicate the heterogenous nature of growth and develpmental processes in children living in various regions of Russia. The study was aimed to perform the comparative analysis of physical development between children aged 15–17 living in Samara (a total of 714 children were examined, among them 368 boys and 346 girls) and children of the same age group living in Nizhny Novgorod (a total of 689 children, among them 351 boys and 338 girls). In school students aged 16–17, significant differences in the mean height were revealed: adolescents living in Samara were taller than those living in Nizhny Novgorod (p = 0.001). The same trend was observed in girls of the same age group. Comparative analysis showed that girls aged 15–17 living in Samara were significantly taller (p < 0.001) than girls who lived in Nizhny Novgorod. Assessment of body weight showed that the weight of boys aged 15–16 who lived in Samara was significantly higher compared to boys living in Nizhny Novgorod (p = 0.009). No significant differences were revealed between the groups of 17‑year‑old boys and the groups of girls aged 15–17 (р = 0.7). The findings on the differences in the anthropometric indicators of children living in Samara and Nizhny Novgorod justify the need for periodic development and use in healthcare practice of the regional standards for assessment of physical development in children and adolescents.

Physical development in adolescence is one of the key aspects of the modern society’s well-being. Assessment of physical development in children and adolescents represents an essential component of the pediatric population health status estimation being a clear indicator of the impact of lifestyle, environment, and learningmprocess on the child’s body. The study was aimed to assess the dynamic changes of physical development indicators in the high school-age children in the Samara Region over a decade. The paper deals with the anthropometric data of physical development acquired in 2013 and 2023. A total of 476 children aged 14–16 years were examined (256 boys, 220 girls). Physical development assessment performed in the group of high school-age boys revealed significant changes. Boys of all ages examined in 2023 lagged behind their peers examined in 2013 in the number of individuals with harmonious physical development. Furthermore, a significantly greater number of children with disharmonious physical development due to excess body weight were revealed in 2023. The results yielded by assessing physical development in girls are slightly different: the today’s 14-year-old schoolgirls lag behind girls examined in 2013 in the size of population with harmonious physical development. The body height comparative analysis results have shown that the today’s schoolchildren do not lag behind their peers examined in 2013 in all gender-age groups (p > 0.05). A significant increase in the schoolchildrens’ body weight relative to 2013 is likely to result from the quarantine measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, which made children stay at home for longer and reduced their physical activity.
