Comparative Analysis of Firearm Discharge Recorded by Gunshot Detection Technology and Calls for Service in Louisville, Kentucky

Abstract: Gunshot detection technology (GDT) has been increasingly adopted by law enforcement agencies to tackle the problem of underreporting of crime via 911 calls for service, which undoubtedly affects the quality of crime mapping and spatial analysis. This article investigates the spatial and temporal patterns of gun violence by comparing data collected from GDT and 911 calls in Louisville, Kentucky. We applied hot spot mapping, near repeat diagnosis, and spatial regression approaches to the analysis of gunshot inci… Show more

“…14 Consequently, theft, burglary, and assault are crimes where movement after brutality incidents is likely. In addition to being fairly common and substantively important, gunshot calls provide a unique analytic opportunity to benchmark changes in citizen reports against acoustic measures of shots fired (Carr & Doleac 2016, Renda & Zhang 2019. Plots of the daily 911 calls for each crime type before and after each incident are shown in Appendix Figures A1 -A4.…”

“…Finally, a regional study by [18] for Louisville, KY (USA), investigates differences in space and time locations between gunshot detection technology (GDT) data and 911 calls for gun violence. The two datasets are depicted through methods, such as hot spot mapping, near repeat diagnosis, and (spatial) regression, including ordinary least squares (OLS) and spatial lag models based on neighborhood characteristics derived from theorical criminology.…”
