Comparative Analysis of Far East Sikhotinsky Rhododendron (Rh. sichotense) and East Siberian Rhododendron (Rh. adamsii) Using Supercritical CO2-Extraction and HPLC-ESI-MS/MS Spectrometry

Abstract: Rhododendron sichotense Pojark. and Rhododendron adamsii Rheder have been actively used in ethnomedicine in Mongolia, China and Buryatia (Russia) for centuries, as an antioxidant, immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, vitality-restoring agent. These plants contain various phenolic compounds and fatty acids with valuable biological activity. Among green and selective extraction methods, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction has been shown to be the method of choice for the recovery of these naturally … Show more

“…A similar metabolite, myricetin, was previously detected in Rhododendron species, i.e., R. adamsii , R. sichotense , R. ambiguum , and R. luteum [ 8 , 14 , 21 ]. Its high concentration of 1.377 ± 0.012 mg/g DE) was similar to the amount determined in the leaves of R. adamsii [ 21 ]. Quercetin was another aglycone present in a substantial amount in RL-M (1.609 ± 0.011 mg/g DE).…”

“…High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in combination with tandem mass spectrometry was used to identify target analytes in the extracts. Previously, the authors carried out metabolomic studies of Far Eastern plant species, such as Schizandra chinensis, Rhodiola rosea, Rhododendron adamsii, and Panax ginseng [14,15].…”

“…However, when extra 5% chloroform was added to the extraction system as a co-solvent, it significantly increased the yields of the total fatty acid fraction. The choice of the solvent and the extraction range parameters was based on the results of previous works where starfish material was treated with a plant matrix [4,5]. Despite the fact that the main target components are soluble in liquid CO 2 only above 200 bar, it is possible to separate significant amounts of the lipid fraction [6,7].…”
