Comparative Analysis and Optimization of Technical and Weight Parameters of Turbo-Electric Propulsion Systems

Abstract: According to Flightpath 2050, the aviation industry is aiming to substantially reduce emissions over the coming decades. One possible solution to meet these ambitious goals is by moving to hybrid-electric drivetrain architectures which require the electric components to be extremely lightweight and efficient at the same time. It has been claimed in several publications that cryogenic and in particular superconducting components can help to fulfill such requirements that potentially cannot be achieved with non-… Show more

“…An advantage of this architecture is the possibility of using "green fuels" such as Hydrogen. State-of-the-art turboelectric developments combine SOFCs fueled by hydrogen that supply EMs to drive fans, and cryogenic superconducting components (Ji et al 2020;Filipenko et al 2020).…”

“…Thus, it is possible to reach high power to mass ratio without increasing the rotational speed. In contrast to aircraft conventional machines, which tend to increase in speed and require the use of a mechanical gearbox [24], the expected operating speed for flux modulation motors is only a few thousand rpm.…”
