The effect of urea, sulfate ammonium, nitrate potassium and horse manure on S. rolfsii was tested in vitro, alone and in combination with T. harzianum. Tests on liquid culture media showed that Sclerotium rolfsii did not utilize urea as a source of nitrogen while sulfate ammonium and nitrate potassium allowed the growth of the fungus. On a solid medium, the fertilizers at rates of 12 g N•m-2 and 18 g N•m-2 had an inhibitory effect on the growth of Sclerotium rolfsii mycelium. The highest effect was observed for urea. In contrast, Trichoderma harzianum assimilated all fertilizers but had a preference for sulfate ammonium. The antagonistic activity of Trichoderma harzianum on Sclerotium rolfsii on solid culture media was stimulated in the presence of the three nitrogen sources. The horse manure at high rates inhibited the growth of S. rolfsii, favored the development of T. harzianum and enhanced its antagonistic effect on S. rolfsii. The confrontation of Trichoderma harzianum with sclerotia of Sclerotium rolfsii in soil fertilized separately with urea, sulfate ammonium, nitrate potassium or manure showed an increase in the antagonistic activity. Particularly, the manure in combination with T. harzianum induced high mortality of sclerotia of the fungus. In the agronomic context of the region of Doukkala, it seems adequate to add these nitrogen sources to contribute to the biological control of Sclerotium rolfsii.

“…Maintenance and inoeulum production of fungal antagonists Coniothyrium minitans (IMI 134523) was onginally isolated from a sclerotium of S. sclerotiorum (Turner & Tribe, 1976), Trichoderma harzianum Rifai (HH3) and an unidentified Trichoderma sp, (Bl) isolated from soil in France were provided by Dr P. Davet, INRA, Montpellicr, France, Both had shown laboratory and field activity against Sclerotinia sp. (Davet tl ai, 1983;Artigues & Davet, 1984;Davet, 198b;Davet & Camporota, 1986). All fungi were maintained on potato dextrose agar (PDA) (Oxoid) at 18°C, To prepare inoculum for glasshouse experiments, mixtures comprising 2 1 of flaked maize/ perlite (15% v/v) and 400 ml tap-water in autoclavable bags (Sterilin) were autoclaved twice for 15 min and then inoculated with 100 ml of a suspension of 10' spores ml~' in distilled water.…”

Coniothyrium minitans, Trichoderma harzianum (HH3) and Trichoderma sp. (B1) were tested for ability to control disease caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in a sequence of a celery crop and two lettuce crops in the glasshouse. In control plots, over 80% of celery and 90 and 60% of lettuce in first and second crops, respectively, were infected at harvest. Only the C. minitaris treatment in the first lettuce crop decreased disease and increased marketable yield. Nevertheless, C. minitans reduced the number of sclerotia recovered at harvest in the celery and first lettuce crops and decreased sclerotial survival over the autumn fallow periods following the celery and second lettuce crop. C. minitans survived in soil for over 1 year and spread to infect sclerotia in virtually all other plots. C. minitans infected sclerotia at all times of the year but sclerotia still failed to degrade during the summer months when the soil was dry. The Trichoderma species tested had no effect on disease and almost no effect on the survival of the sclerotia. even though they could be recovered from soil for the duration of the experiments.
