Compact waveguide splitter networks

Abstract: We demonstrate compact waveguide splitter networks in siliconon- insulator (SOI) rib waveguides using trench-based splitters (TBSs) and bends (TBBs). Rather than a 90 degrees geometry, we use 105 degrees TBSs to facilitate reliable fabrication of high aspect ratio trenches suitable for 50/50 splitting when filled with SU8. Three dimensional (3D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation is used for splitter and bend design. Measured TBB and TBS optical efficiencies are 84% and 68%, respectively. Compact … Show more

“…43,44 Waveguide splitter are important elements in a variety of applications such as power splitters for planar lightwave circuits or optical sources for integrated microfluidic devices. 47 Such applications rely on the division of an optical signal into N outputs ͑1 ϫ N͒. Finally, straight Y junctions with a guide width of 2 m were formed on sulphide films by similar processes.…”

“…Optical power splitter is widely used as power divider or combiner in modulator, switches, interferometer devices and semiconductor lasers [1][2][3]. Its main function is to split the incoming light into multi paths where each path may carry same or different ratio of power.…”

“…The interval between two waveguides is 12 μm and the total length of the incoupler area is about 1.5 cm. Though for a MMI, the correlation between wavelength and the MMI dimension cannot be neglected [4], other light separating structures such as waveguide splitters [5,10,16] will be suitable for a light source with a wide spectral range as well. In this simulation, LEDs with narrow spectral range are in use [6].…”
