The higher order mode substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) has advantages in the applications, which are: 1) simplifying the structure with reduced fabrication cost and 2) enhancing the stability of performance by relaxed fabrication tolerance. In this paper, two wideband mode excitation structures are presented and investigated for the SIW. A slot along the mid line in the longitudinal direction of the SIW is employed to convert the electromagnetic field pattern between slotline and the mode SIW. The second structure is based on the slot aperture coupling and can realize wideband direct transition between the mode SIW and microstrip line. Both transitions have a simple and compact structure, as well as broadband characteristics. The wideband transition performance is demonstrated in this paper. As application examples of the transitions, two broadband substrate integrated baluns are presented and fabricated based on the mode excitation structures and mode characteristics. The 180 out-of-phase and equal magnitude of the balun outputs in a wide frequency range can be achieved inherently. The balun based on the slotline excitation has a fractional bandwidth of 50.2%, from 7.3 to 12.2 GHz, with measured return loss, amplitude imbalance, and phase imbalance better than 10 and 0.45 dB and 3.8 . The balun based on the aperture coupling excitation shows a fractional bandwidth of 50.3%, from 7 to 11.7 GHz, with measured return loss, insertion loss, amplitude imbalance, and phase imbalance better than 10, 1, and 0.27 dB and 2.4 , respectively. Both baluns not only show good performance, but also demonstrate the existence of the mode in the SIW.

Abstract-Two novel compact magic-T configurations designed as a two layer structure are proposed in this paper. They consist of a microstrip tee-junction and resonance circuit composed of a microstrip line combined with rectangular or radial stubs. These microstrip circuits are respectively printed at the top and bottom layers of the structure, and coupled via a slot located in the common ground plane. The microstrip patch and slot are placed parallel to each other forming novel microstrip-slotline transitions, which provide broadband operation of the magic-Ts. Transmission line equivalent circuits are used to explain the performance of the proposed hybrids. It is shown that magic-T with a radial stub demonstrates wider operation bandwidth and better performance than the structure with a rectangular stub. In order to validate their performance, the prototypes of both configurations were manufactured and measured. Experimental and simulation results show that the resulting magic-T using a radial resonator has a fractional bandwidth of over 40% for 0.2 dB amplitude and 0.5 • phase imbalance. The experimental results are in good agreement well with equivalent circuit and full-wave simulations.

A high-power-capacity transmitting and receiving structure (TRS) is proposed. It has the ability of transmitting the GW-level high power microwave from the microwave sources with the horizontal polarized TE11 mode and receiving the microwave signal from the target with the orthogonal polarized TE11 mode. It is realized by the cooperation of a polarization-isolation-structure (PIS) and a two-way circular TE11 mode to rectangular TE10 mode power divider. Simulation shows that from 9.65 to 9.71 GHz, its power capacity is more than 3 GW at the transmitting format. The transmitting and receiving channel have an isolation of 60 dB which can prevent the receivers connecting to the receiving channel suffering from breakdown. The insertion losses for the transmitting and receiving format are both less than 0.03 dB.
