Compact left handed coplanar strip line phase shifter on screen printed BST

Abstract: A compact continuously tunable phase shifter is presented employing integrated ferroelectric varactors based on screen printed BST thick film. The circuit is based on left handed transmission line topology that allows to considerably reduce the module size. The proposed design has a total length of 1.3mm and provides a differential phase shift up to 330 • . Furthermore, the phase shifter is in coplanar strip configuration which makes it suitable for systems consisting of balanced components.

“…The functionality of many tunable microwave devices is based on the use of ferroelectric thick films. Among these, especially barium strontium titanate (Ba x Sr 1‐x TiO 3 , BST) demonstrated great potential in devices such as tunable phase shifters, matching networks, filters or antennas . Its relative permittivity can be changed by applying an electrostatic field, which allows the preparation of tunable capacitors (varactors).…”

“…Barium Strontium Titanate (Ba x Sr 1‐x TiO 3 , BST) has gained great attention as a tunable material for microwave devices such as phase shifters, tunable matching networks, filters, or antennas . It combines outstanding dielectric characteristics such as a strong field‐dependent permittivity (e.g., tunability) and an adequate dielectric loss.…”

“…The requirements of external dc biasing circuitry for these diodes/mechanical switches not only complicated the design but could also be a drawback in fully printing electronics design applications and for large antenna array systems comprising thousands of phase shifters. A tunable phase shifter based on Inkjetprinted BST material in between the finger spacings of CRLH-TL was widely studied in [12][13][14][15]. In [16], the design of fully printable conformal antennas with polymer/CRLH-TL composite phase shifters was investigated.…”
