Comorbidity in heart failure. Results of the Spanish RICA Registry

Abstract: HF is a comorbid condition. ChI is a simple and feasible tool for estimating the burden of comorbidities in such population. We believe that a holistic approach to HF would improve prognosis and the relief the pressure exerted on public health services.

“…Age is a well-recognized factor associated with mortality in general population and also in HF subjects [6,17], so it seems logical also for new onset HF. The same reasoning would be valid for global comorbidity [24]. Finally our results confirm the importance of starting treatment with beta-blockers in patients with HF, and even after the first decompensation [25].…”

“…Previous studies have also reported a significant comorbid burden in patients with HF and its presence is independently associated with increased mortality. 28,29 This burden appears to have increased over time. 29 In the cardiovascular network PRESERVE study undertaken between 2005-2008, less than 2% of HF patients had no comorbid conditions, 30 whilst data derived from the Spanish National Heart Failure Registry suggests that only 15% of patients with HF have no comorbidity 28 whilst only 4% individuals with HF in a Medicare dataset of 122,630 patients had no non-cardiac comorbid conditions and 40% had five or more such comorbidities.…”

“…These findings are particularly important given that internal medicine departments tend to admit older patients with high comorbidity and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction [19,20]. With regard to the hyponatremia codified in the MBDS registry, only 2.2% of cases were identified when patients with HF were admitted to internal medicine departments.…”
