For estimating the amount of carbon (C) in dead wood, conversion factors from raw volume per decay class to dry weight were developed using three different classification systems for the species Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and birch (Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh) in Sweden. Also the C concentration in dead wood (dry weight) was studied. About 2500 discs were collected from logs in managed forests located on 289 temporary National Forest Inventory (NFI) sample plots and in 11 strips located in preserved forests. The conversion factors were based on an extensive data compilation with a wide representation of different site-, stand-, species-and dead wood properties and were assumed to represent the population of fallen dead wood in Sweden. The density decreased significantly by decay class and the range in density for decay classes was widest for the NFI decay classification system, suggesting this to be the most suitable. The C concentration in dead wood biomass increased with increasing decay class and in average Norway spruce (Picea abies) showed a lower C concentration than Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The average dead wood C store of Swedish forests was estimated to 0.85 Mg C/ha.

Svalbard comprises several islands in the northern part of the Arctic Ocean. No larger tree species grow on the islands, but driftwood and construction timber have accumulated on the islands during the last 200 years. A thorough inventory of lignicolous basidiomycetous species was carried out on the island of Spitsbergen in 2001. The number of species found was 24. Of these fourteen were collected for the fi rst time in Svalbard. Altogether 115 specimens were identifi ed to species level. Corticioid fungi were the largest group with 84 specimens of 12 species. Some of the species found are seldom collected and poorly known also elsewhere. Only a few of the species were found in all the investigated areas. Half of the species were found only once or twice. Some of the new fi ndings represent prominent range extensions.

Wood-decaying fungi are regarded as the main decomposers of woody debris in boreal forests. Given that fungal respiration makes a significant contribution to terrestrial carbon flows, it is important to understand how the wooddecaying fungal metabolism is regulated in relation to different environmental conditions and disturbances. In the present study, we investigated the effect of temperature stress on wood decomposition rate in 18 species of wood-decaying fungi, representing a broad range of species-habitat associations. Heat shock duration and temperature were calibrated to match the conditions of a forest fire. We found a general increase in fungal decay rate after heat shock; the response was more pronounced in species associated with fire-prone forests. The underlying mechanism is unclear, but possibly relates to an up-regulation at the cellular level in response to heat shock. Our results show that the decomposition rate of dead wood can be strongly affected by environmental triggers.
