Community knowledge and utilization of mangroves in Panabo Mangrove Park, Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Philippines

Abstract: Abstract. Alimbon JA, Manseguiao MRS. 2021. Community knowledge and utilization of mangroves in Panabo Mangrove Park, Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Philippines. Intl J Bonorowo Wetlands 11: 51-57. Awareness of community knowledge and utilization patterns of mangrove ecosystems and their services is integral to conservation and management. However, this aspect remains to be less explored, especially in the Philippines. Hence, this study assessed the community knowledge and utilization of mangroves in Panabo Man… Show more

“…Ecotourism is also an important livelihood source for many communities particularly in Indonesia (Purwowibowo et al, 2020;Putri et al, 2014;Singgalen, 2020), Thailand (Vorasiha, 2018), and Malaysia (Hattam et al, 2021). Other uncommon yet, important utilization of mangroves includes their medicinal use for various diseases (Feurer et al, 2018;Mojiol et al, 2016;Oratai Neamsuvan, 2012;Tamalene et al, 2021), and as a source of sh poison and shing material (Alimbon & Manseguiao, 2021;Ono & Suzuki, 2013).…”

“…The uniqueness of extreme environmental parameters in the Gili Meno saltwater lake requires the biota that makes up the lake ecosystem to survive, one of which is the vegetation of various types of mangroves that grow around the lake with an area of ±3 ha. Mangrove vegetation that grows around the Gili Meno lake has various environmental services, namely as a buffer for the island ecosystem in its benefits environmental services such as carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption, disaster mitigation (abrasion, coastal waves, sea breeze barriers, and tsunamis), availability of clean air (O2), stability of coastal waters, habitat for biota, mangrove ecotourism and germplasm (Aksornkoae and Kato 2011;Mcleod et al 2011;Pendleton et al 2012;Giri et al 2015;Nordhaus et al 2019;Rahman et al 2020;Sadono et al 2020;Alimbon and Manseguiao 2021a).…”

“…Mangrove forests are an important biological resource for the coastal areas of Indonesia. They possess a variety of biological functions, including food resources (Alimbon and Manseguiao 2021), nesting sites, breeding grounds and habitats for various marine organisms, such as fish and shrimp, and other wildlife species. Furthermore, mangrove ecosystems have ecological services in terms of protecting coastlines, regulating sedimentation, improving water quality and controlling seawater intrusion, storing carbon and stabilizing micro-climate, and providing economic resources such as timber and non-timber products (honey, tannins) and ecotourism (Askornkoae and Kato 2011; Giri et al 2015;Kathiresan and Bingham 2001;Kusmana 2014;Spalding et al 2010).…”
