There were about 450,000 hectares of mangroves in the Philippines in the early 1900s which declined to 311,400 hectares in 2020 due to continued pressures from human-caused degradations such as illegal logging and conversion to fish and shrimp ponds in which rehabilitation is needed. This study, therefore, determined the factors that influence the resident's Willingness to Pay for mangrove rehabilitation in Barangay Raw-an Point, Baroy, Lanao del Norte, Philippines. Using the single-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation method, the willingness to pay of the local community for mangrove rehabilitation was assessed. A total of 200 households were involved in the survey. Focus Group Discussion was utilized in obtaining the bid amounts used in the survey questionnaire. The results show that 84% of the 200 households expressed willingness to pay for the mangrove rehabilitation project. Furthermore, the mean willingness to pay was computed at PHP 139.00 (2.40 USD) per household per month, equivalent to Php 665,524.00 (11,502 USD) per year for the total number of households in Barangay. The findings of the logistic regression analysis revealed that the bid amount, knowledge, and perception on both the economic importance and the ecological services provided by mangroves affect the willingness to pay on the respondents.

Objectives: To determine the awareness of mangrove ecosystem services, uses of mangroves, awareness of mangrove management strategies, and challenges of households in Maliwaliw Island, Salcedo, Eastern Samar, Philippines. Methods: A survey was conducted using an interview schedule to determine the households' awareness of the mangrove ecosystem services and mangrove management strategies in Maliwaliw Island, Salcedo, Eastern Samar. Moreover, a mangrove management problem confrontation index (MMPCI) was also created to describe the mangrove management challenges in Maliwaliw Island. About 99 households completed and participated in the survey. Results were analyzed using appropriate descriptive statistical tools, and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the selected socio-demographic characteristics of households and their awareness of the mangrove ecosystem services. Findings: Results showed that the households were very aware of the ecosystem services they directly experience on the island, e.g., coastal protection from typhoons (3.09), coastal protection from wave action and storm surge (3.07), and coastal protection from strong winds (3.03). Education, income, and years of stay have a weak correlation with several mangrove ecosystem services, implying that enhancing education and income over time may help improve the community's awareness of the importance of mangroves in sustaining their livelihood, well-being, and survival. The awareness of the mangrove ecosystem services is critical in enhancing the community's appreciation of their role in sustaining their livelihood and survival and engagement in conservation efforts. Moreover, the households identified typhoons and storm surges as the first two challenges in mangrove management, with a PC index of 249 and 255, respectively, for the island is prone to typhoons. Participatory decision-making has been extensively adopted worldwide as an essential mechanism and a good governance principle to reach a consensus in natural resource management. However, in most communities, local people who depend on forests are not involved in the decision-making process regarding conserving protected areas. This research assesses the ramifications of collaboration or contravention on effective participatory decision-making in collaborative forest management in Echuya Central Forest Reserve. It provides insights into how community consultations and participation of forest-adjacent communities in planning meetings influence the conservation of protected areas. We collected data from a total of 639 respondents, including Collaborative Forest Management (CFM) group members and non-CFM community members, government institutions, conservation organizations, and local community leaders, using semi-structured questionnaires, interview guides, and Focus Group Discussion guides. Results indicate that community consultations allow CFM stakeholders, particularly community members, to give ideas on how such projects can be implemented without destroying forest resources, promoting the goal of conserving the forest reserve. Community members’ participation in planning meetings allows them to contribute ideas about relevant and appropriate forest conservation approaches. However, the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and other non-community actor groups dominate the decision-making process mainly because the NFA has the legal mandate to manage the forest reserve on behalf of the Government. We concluded that the connivance of government forestry officials with unauthorized forest resource users undermines the spirit of participatory decision-making. Dishonesty and lack of accountability hampered effective participatory decision-making, and low attendance at meetings undermines effective participation in decision-making. Thus, community members’ consistent attendance of meetings is paramount for positive outcomes of participatory decision-making for the conservation of forests
