Common sage (Salvia officinalis) antiviral role: potentiality of a Unani hand sanitizer in COVID-19 (corona virus) second wave control

Abstract: The world has been fighting against a pandemic for more than a year, caused by a highly infectious disease named COVID-19 rooted by the novel coronavirus 2019. It has already been spread out in most of the countries and a few of which are experiencing second wave. The Novel coronavirus-2019 (SARS CoV-2) incurred more than 1.6 million deaths and 76 million cases in the world population (till 20 December 2020). Although some vaccines are being launched, however, their effectivity and availability are still unkno… Show more

“…For example, three salvianolic acids, salvianolic acid A, salvianolic acid B, and salvianolic acid C, isolated from S. miltiorrhiza was reported to inhibits SARS-CoV-2 entry by binding in the interface between the RBD of the SARS-CoV-2 and the ACE2 receptors, hence, inhibiting entry to the viral entry [ 122 ]. Other studies have reported that S. officinalis plays a potent inhibitory role against SARS-CoV-2 and have potential applicability in the manufacture of Unani hand sanitizers [ 21 , 123 ]. Recently, phytochemicals of Salvia spp-origin such as phenolic compound, rutin and a benzoylated monoterpene glycoside, plebeioside B have been shown inhibit SARS-CoV-2 protease, indicating potential application in managing COVID-19 replication [ 124 ].…”

“…The structures of 34-37 were established by NMR spectral analysis [61]. Further bicyclic sesterterpene lactones containing C-23 carboxylic acid methyl ester such as 6α,8α,15(S)-trihydroxy-23-carboxymethyl-labd-13( 14),17-dien-16S,19-olide (38) were isolated from S. dominica L. [54], while (4R,5R,8R,9R,10S,16R,13E)-8-hydroxy-23carboxymethyl-labd-13(14),17(18)-dien-16,19-olide (39) and (4R,5R,6S,8R,9R,10S,15S,16S,13E)-8,15-dihydroxy-23-carboxymethyl-labd-13(14),17(18)-dien-16,19-olide (40) (Figure 9) were isolated from S. tingitana Etl. That the relative configuration of 39 and 40 was the same as that of 33 was based on the values of coupling constants of H-5 (J = 12.0 and 2.3 Hz) as well as NOESY correlations between H-5 and H-9, and between H 3 -22, H 3 -24, and H 3 -25 of 39 and 40, which were consistent with a β-orientation of Me-22, Me-24, and Me-25 as well as a trans junction of the decalin ring system.…”

“…Hand sanition is a crucial step in controlling the infectious virus in the healthcare systems. 9 Numerous hand-sanitation products were accessible outside as they became an emergent rise for the maintanance of hand-hygiene can be seen 14 . Besides regular soaps, hand sanitizers which consists of different chemical agents with effective anti-microbial properties(such as chlorhexidine, iodophors, quaternary ammonium compounds, triclosan) without the use of water or hand drying materials are used rapidly these days.…”
