Commercialisation of a recombinant vaccine againstBoophilus microplus

Abstract: Increasingly, there is need for methods to control cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) infestations by the use of non-chemical technology. This need is brought about by a mixture of market forces and the failure or inadequacy of existing technology. A recombinant vaccine has now been developed against the tick. This vaccine relies on the uptake with the blood meal of antibody directed against a critical protein in the tick gut. The isolation of the vaccine antigen, Bm86, and its production as a recombinant prote… Show more

“…Therefore, the development of alternative control strategies is necessary, in which vaccination against ticks is a desirable method. A concealed antigen based-vaccine against Rhiphicephalus (Boophilus) microplus [7] infestation was successfully commercialized [28]. A concealed antigen in the tick gut, however, is unlikely for the boost of the immune response by natural tick exposure compared with salivary glands antigens.…”

“…A primeira vacina comercial contra carrapatos foi lançada em 1994,na Austrália, tendo o nome de *TickGARD ® , formulada com o antígeno Bm86 (Willadsen et al, 1995). Posteriormente, um grupo cubano clonou essa proteína em levedura Pichia pastoris, sendo esta a segunda vacina formulada, SILVEIRA, W.H., CARVALHO, G.D. e PECONICK, A.P.…”

“…Targeting proteins expressed on the gut surface has been a particularly successful approach for vaccine development in blood-feeding nematodes (Knox et al, 2003) and ectoparasites such as ticks (Willadsen et al, 1995). Munn (1977) first described contortin, using electron microscopy, as a helical polymeric extracellular structure present in large amounts in the intestine and the pharynx from the L4 and adult stage of the sheep parasite Haemonchus contortus.…”
