Photovoltaic cladding on the surfaces of commercial buildings has the potential for considerable reductions in carbon emissions due to embedded renewable power generation displacing conventional power utilization. In this paper, a model is described for the optimization of photovoltaic cladding densities on commercial building surfaces. The model uses a modi ed form of the ' ll factor' method for photovoltaic power supply coupled to new regression-based procedures for power demand estimation. An optimization is included based on a de ned 'mean index of satisfaction' for matched power supply and demand (i.e., zero power exportation to the grid). The mean index of satisfaction directly translates to the reduction in carbon emission that might be expected over conventional power use. On clear days throughout the year, reductions of conventional power use of at least 60% can be achieved with an optimum cladding pattern targeted to lighting and small power load demands.

The promise of solar electricijty based on the photovoltaic (PV) effect is well known. Why don't we see these systems all over the world? Consumers in the United States are well-known for their attraction to new technology.Why aren't PV systems appearing on roof-tops in the U.S.? The answer may be that grid-connected roof top systems are Too difficult to acquire, Too difficult to integrate with the grid, Too difficult to measure the energy Too expensive.It is essential that we make PV systems userfriendly, while reducing the component and system costs. Our elegant technology must be reduced to practical systems that can be used by the average person -everywhere.Choosing the right problem will help us achieve the promise of photovoltaics.This talk will describe a methodology to choose the right problems as an approach to PV development. Solar cell and system examples are presented.

Photovoltaic (PV) systems located at customer sites can be used to meet utility needs for demand-side management (DSM) applications. PV-DSM can also represent a high-value intermediate mrket for PV in the utility sector. Maximum value for PV in DSM applications can be achieved by incorporating a dispatching capability to PV systems (through the addition of storage). This enables utilities to evaluate PV systems as a peak-shaving technology. To date, peak-shaving has been the higher value DSM application for U.S. utilities. Our analysis of the value of dispatchable PV-DSM systems indicates that small-scale, customer-sited systems are approaching competitive cost levels in several regions of the U.S. that have favorable load matching and peak demand pricing characteristics. This paper presents the results for PV-DSM systems located within the service territories of five case study utilities.
