Este trabajo es un estudio exploratorio para encontrar elementos para la internacionalización del teatro independiente mexicano. Una revisión de literatura mostró el impacto económico y social de las industrias culturales, identificando los factores que inciden en la internacionalización del teatro, tales como el acceso a fondos, políticas públicas, capacitación de capital humano, repertorios, entre otros. Con ellos se diseñó y realizó una encuesta a 124 compañías independientes de teatro mexicanas durante agosto a diciembre de 2020. El análisis estadístico empleando el software IBM SPSS v. 25, arrojó un listado de retos y oportunidades para la internacionalización teatral en el contexto mexicano, destacando la importancia de los fondos gubernamentales extranjeros, la participación en festivales y la coproducción. Este resultado puede ayudar a diseñar estrategias a seguir y cambiar la forma de comercializar el teatro, ayudando a que México aumente su referencia cultural en el mundo más allá de los estereotipos culturales.
