Combustion synthesis of one‐dimensional nanocrystalline silicon carbide

Abstract: Beta-SiC (cubic phase) nanowires (SiCNWs) have been grown spontaneously during the autothermal selfpropagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) from elemental silicon and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) powder mixtures in oxygen-enriched atmosphere. The combustion process was on-line monitored using highspeed photography in order to estimate the reaction processing time which was well below 1 s. From the emission spectroscopy the averaged combustion temperature was evaluated to be close to 2000 K. The product… Show more

“…The effect of process parameters, such as: reactant composition (powdered Mg/carbonate, Si/PTFE or Si/PTFE/NaN 3 mixture), initial combustion pressure (1–20 atm) and atmosphere (air, argon, nitrogen) was studied. The products were characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy 2. The protocol for the chemical purification of sought products was proposed.…”

“…The thermolysis was initiated by resistive heating of a carbon tape immersed inside the reactants in the crucible. It took usually only 1–2 s 10 to accomplish the process, accompanied by an abrupt increase in pressure and temperature. After the combustion was completed, the gaseous products were vented.…”

“…General characteristics of the product morphology depend on the combustion atmosphere 9, 10. The tests in air yielded mostly a spongy material filling the whole reactor, with some crucible residue and a fine powder at the bottom of the reactor.…”

“…Thus, the CS processes have become an important tool in the synthesis of new inorganic materials . As an example, we showed elsewhere that SiC nanowires can be efficiently produced from the mixture of simple reactants (Si/Teflon ® ). Here, we aim at the CS formation of novel graphene‐related nanocarbons which have a unique variety of properties, which make them promising candidates for various applications.…”
