Combustion Synthesis of AlN (Al 3 O 3 N), BN, ZrN, and TiN in Air and Ceramic Application

Abstract: The chapter summarizes the features of the combustion synthesis for nano- and micron-sized metal powders (Al, B, Zr, and Ti) and their mixtures with additives in N2/O2 mixtures for nitrides (oxynitrides) production. The formation of nitrides as the main phase of the combustion products of metals in air are experimentally proved and theoretically justified. The physics and chemistry of the nitride formation by the combustion process, new combustion mechanisms, the stabilization of nonequilibrium products, and t… Show more

“…Aluminum oxide is one of the most widely studied and used materials with diverse structural and functional properties. The versatility and applicability of aluminum oxide can further be expanded by substituting oxygen with nitrogen, leading to the structurally and functionally interesting class of materials called aluminum oxynitride (AlON) . In particular, spinel type AlON has attracted considerable attention in terms not only of its outstanding optical transparency in the range from ultraviolet (UV) to mid‐infrared but also of the excellent mechanical durability at high temperature .…”
