This paper presents an investigation of sewage sludge gasification in a fixed bed gasifier. Experiments were conducted on a laboratory scale fixed bed gasifier. In the experiments, two types of dried sewage sludge were tested and their properties were analysed. Parameters such as air ratio λ = 0.12 to 0.27, gasification agent temperature t = 50 to 250 °C and gasification agent composition ( = 0.21 and > 0.21) were found to influence on temperature distribution, syngas Lower Heating Value (LHV) and syngas composition. The results indicate that the syngas LHV was found to decrease with increased air ratio for all analyzed cases: cold and preheated air and cold enriched air. The increase in the percentage of the main combustible components was accompanied by a decrease in the concentration of carbon dioxide. Increasing oxygen concentration increased the temperature, which tended to favor the formation of smaller molecules in the gas mixture. Thus, the enriched air medium produced a gas with a higher LHV. In contrast to conventional gasification, gasification process with gasification agent preheating causes that the flux of heat necessary to support endothermic gasification reactions is producing more effective. Air preheating causes increases hydrogen and carbon monoxide production.

The problem of wastewater treatment plant sewage sludge is becoming crucial. Indeed the quantity of sewage sludge will increase with the population and the economic developments, the rise of the number of treatment plants and their better performance. Sewage sludge treatment is at the moment realized in limited ways. Whatever the future of those ways and without creating polemics, they will not be able, to absorb this increasing volume. It consequently becomes necessary to diversify the methods of treatment to answer the problems arising from the management of this waste. Within this framework, the new thermochemical ways of treatment by valorization seems more interesting. Indeed, they present in addition to the advantage of the possibility of processing, the capacity to easily produce "storable" and valuable compounds. Thus will treat, in this article, the interest to develop the processes of gasification of waste water sewage sludge. Le devenir des boues de stations d'épuration des eaux usées (Step) est un problème crucial posé aux pays industrialisés. En effet la quantité de boues produite en Step ne va cesser d’augmenter avec les croissances démographique et économique, ainsi que le nombre et la performance des Step des eaux usées. Actuellement, le traitement des boues de Step se fait par différentes filières, dont le nombre est limité. Quel que soit le devenir de ces filières et sans créer de polémiques particulières elles ne pourront, dans tous les cas, pas absorber ce volume croissant. Il devient dès lors nécessaire de diversifier les méthodes de traitement pour répondre aux problèmes posés par la gestion de ce déchet. Dans ce cadre, les nouvelles filières de traitement par valorisation thermochimiques semblent des plus intéressantes. En effet, elles présentent en plus de la capacité de traitement, l’avantage de produire des composés « stockables » et facilement «valorisables». Nous traiterons ainsi, dans cet article, de l'intérêt de développer les procédés de gazéification des boues de Step.

Energy recovery from sewage sludge offers an opportunity for sustainable management of sewage sludge and energy. Anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis are among the most promising processes applicable for sewage sludge-to-energy conversion. Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge forms methane-rich biogas, which can be utilized as fuel to offset heat and electricity consumption of the wastewater treatment sector. However, the digestion process has the efficiency limitation since it cannot sufficiently extract the energy from sewage sludge. The digested sludge is still energy profitable and it contains considerable organic matter, but poor in biodegradability. This paper presents a brief overview of anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and the combination of other processes with anaerobic digestion in the application to bio energy production from sewage sludge. An assessment of energy conversion of five sludge to energy pathways is also presented. The pathways via pyrolysis and the combination of anaerobic digestion, thermal hydrolysis, and thermal drying could achieve higher energy efficiency compared to other pathways.
