Combining effects of ozone and carbon dioxide application on photosynthesis of Thai jasmine rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivar Khao Dawk Mali 105

Abstract: This research investigated the effects of elevated ozone and carbon dioxide on photosynthesis of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivar Khao Dawk Mali 105. Seedlings were kept in indoor climate control chambers which were set to typically background level of ozone (<10 ppb) by passing inlet air from outside through charcoal filter prior to enter to the chambers. Plant samples were fumigated by ozone concentration level at 40 ppb, 70 ppb and carbon dioxide concentration level at 700 ppm. For combined effects, elevated… Show more

“…The Pn rates were similar in ECO and Amb treatments. Similar to our results, Phothi et al. (2016) described that EC mitigates the negative influence of O 3 on growth attributes in rice crop under ECO treatments and take them to at par with the ambient.…”

“…It is important to note that concentrations of CO 2 and O 3 would increase concurrently under the projected future climate changing scenario (Proietti et al., 2016; Sicard et al., 2017). Previous studies indicated that EC negates the adverse effects of EO on plant growth and yield but reduces the positive effects on grain quality under the combined interactive treatment of EC and EO (ECO) (Broberg et al., 2015; Phothi et al., 2016). In the present study, EC significantly increased Pn and LAI in both wheat cultivars and EO reduced them significantly (p < 0.05) (Fig.…”

“…The results indicate that ozone concentration at 300 ppb was the most effective to stimulate both SOD and APX antioxidants in rice cultivar 105 which is considered sensitive to ozone (Phothi et al, 2016). The high level of ozone affects protein activity, gene expression and metabolism in plant cell quickly (Vainonen and Kangasjärvi, 2015;Ueda et al, 2013).…”

“…An early analysis of the antioxidants response to ozone in soybeans reported a negative linear response (Oa et al, 2012). According to Phothi et al (2016), an ozone concentration of 70 pbb has a deleterious effect on the total soluble sugar contents extracted from rice seedlings. During the development stage, excessive ozone exposure increased the concentrations of lignin and phenol in rice straw (Frei et al, 2011).…”
