Combining ability studies in restorer lines of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Abstract: Abstract:The restorer lines are used to get fertile hybrids in hybrid seed production system of sunflower. Improvement of R-lines for fertility and oil content of sunflower is required to get desirable hybrids upon crossing. In the present study, 6 restorer lines were crossed in full diallele and both direct and reciprocal crosses along with parents were evaluated for their combining ability. The analysis of variance revealed higher magnitude of SCA variance than GCA variance for all the characters studied exc… Show more

“…Increased seed yield per plant is the ultimate objective in crop breeding hence high heterosis for seed yield is always looked for two crosses viz., CMS 17A x EC-601951 R (37.18 %, 62.12 %), and PET 89-1 A x RHA 1-1 (15.38 %, 36.36 %) exhibited significant positive high heterosis over both the standard checks. Similar result was also reported by Patil et al, (2012), Patil et al, (2017) and Thombare et al, (2007). High volume weight is having direct relation to increase the weight of seed.…”

“…The magnitude of SCA variance was greater than GCA variance for most of the traits except seed oil content indicating predominance of non-additive variance controlling the expression of these traits. Similar results were reported by Karasu et al (2010), Dudhe et al (2011), Hladni et al (2011) and Patil et al (2017).…”

“…The important of non-additive variances were verified by the dominance degree ratio, which was more than unity for all studied traits (Table 7). The preponderance of non-additive gene action for these traits was supported in the results of Karasu et al (2010), Dudhe et al (2011), Hladni et al (2011) and Patil et al (2017.…”

“…It is originated in North America and largely grown in Ukraine, Russia, European Union, Argentina, China and India. It is an important source of edible and nutritious oil (about 38-50% by composition) and is a rich source of linoleic acid and oleic acid which helps to remove cholesterol deposition in the coronary arteries and thus is good for heart patients [1].…”
