The effect of cytoplasm on the mean performance of inbreds and their corresponding hybrids for seed yield and its contributing traits was investigated in the present study. There was no significant difference found between the inbreds based on cytosterile sources E002 (H. annus), ARG 3 (H. argophyllus) and PET 1 (H. petiolaris) for oil content, oil yield and seed yield indicating that under DS 2 nuclear genetic background all the three alloplasmic lines were on par for these traits. Similarly, for the performance of hybrids, both the cytosterile sources E002 and ARG 3 were equally efficient in the expression of traits viz., stem diameter, 100 seed weight, volume weight, hull content and seed yield but showed significant variations for days to 50% flowering, plant height, head diameter, days to maturity, seed filling percentage, oil content and oil yield. However, for per se performance for traits showing significant variation, E002 cytoplasm based hybrids were superior over ARG 3 cytoplasm based hybrids. Even for mid parent heterosis and heterobeltiosis both cytosterile sources influenced traits under consideration with the positive influence of E002 cytoplasm on MPH and BPH for all the traits except plant height and head diameter.

The present investigation is directed at improving sunflower using hybrids having diverse cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) sources from Helianthus annuus and H. argophyllus. The aim is to develop and identify promising lines and hybrids with a high combining ability and to obtain highly productive oilseed sunflower hybrids having diverse CMS sources. Five diversified CMS lines and 10 testers were crossed in a line × tester mating design to develop 50 F1 hybrids for genetic analysis. The pooled analysis of variance revealed significant differences among hybrids for the traits studied. The mean squares of lines and testers from crosses and GCA variance components revealed the prevalence of additive variances and additive gene action. The mean squares of lines × tester interactions were also significant for all the traits considered. The significance of lines × tester interactions and SCA variance components indicated that SCA is also important in the expression of traits and demonstrated the role of dominant and epistatic genes in controlling the various traits. Among the diverse CMS lines, ARG-6-3-1-4was identified as the best general combiner for stem diameter, volume weight, seed yield, hull content and oil content. While, the line ARG-2-1-2 was the best general combiner for days to 50 per cent flowering, head diameter, 100 seed weight and seed filling per cent. The tester M17-R was observed to be the best general combiner for earliness and volume weight, while RHA 93 was the best general combiner for plant height, seed yield and oil content. The crossMUT-2-8-3-2 × GKVK 3 was found to be a good specific combiner for stem diameter, 100 seed weight, seed yield, seed filling percentage and oil content while, ARG-6-3-1-4 × GKVK 3 was a good specific combiner for days to 50% flowering, plant height and 100 seed weight. The highest standard heterosis for seed yield was observed in the hybrid MUT-2-8-3-2 × GKVK 3 followed by ARG-2-1-2 × LTRR 822 while for oil content the highest was seen in the cross ARG-6-3-1-4 × RHA95-C-1 and thus these hybrids can be exploited for sunflower improvement and diversifying the cytoplasmic male sterile sources of this valuable oilseed crop.

Sunflower is a good alternative crop in rotation, even in light soils. This is due to the changing climate, economic factors and the need to reduce agriculture pressure on the environment. In this field experiment, the effect of soil nitrogen doses (60 and 90 kg ha−1) and additional foliar fertilization (B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn) on selected plant characteristics, yield and quality of sunflower achenes was assessed. The single-factor experiment was conducted in 2020 and 2021 on Luvisol soil. It was shown that a higher nitrogen dose had a positive effect on plant biometric features, protein content in achenes, as well as LAI (leaf area index) and SPAD (soil plant analysis development) indices. Additionally, the applied double foliar spraying resulted in an increase in yield components and quality of achenes. Sunflower yielding depended on the interaction of weather conditions with fertilization. In the first year of the research, high yields were obtained after applying 60 or 90 kg N ha−1 in combination with double foliar fertilization (3.68 and 3.65 t ha−1, respectively). A significantly lower yield was recorded after applying only the 60 kg N ha−1 dose. This was not statistically confirmed in the second year of the study, with a higher average yield of 3.79 t ha−1. Economic calculations showed that the optimal option was to use 60 kg N ha−1 together with single or double foliar fertilization. Fertilizing with 90 kg N ha−1 in combination with micronutrient spraying was the least profitable.
